BYC Café

Good morning, Margie! How many cats do you have? Our four are pretty calm at the moment, but that changes by the minute here.

Two, 11yo and almost 1yo. And possibly my neighbor's cat makes three, but it stays outside and I feed and water it. My neighbor is strangely gone- he is a weird guy anyway and never took care of his chickens either. Guess we will see what happens. There were cougar tracks across our property two nights ago, not to mention the herd of bobcats and owls and coyotes, but he is apparently predator wise.

OFW, sorry your lost one of your birds to the neighbor's dog. Hope you all can work that out peacefully. It's nice she's offering a replacement, so many don't seem to want to take responsibility for their pet's actions.

Sorry you lost a chicken....

That is going to be a tough one because now he knows they are there and dogs always seem to be able to escape sometimes.

Yes I know. It is a bird dog, so there is no getting him to stop. Honestly considering getting a Pyrenees....Husband is going to flip when I bring up that idea :lau

Yes, she is a great neighbor. They have a Granddaughter thing 1s age, I was hoping they could become friends. So I really do not want to raise a stink, but I need to find a way to protect the chickens.

Honestly, when you free range, you are gonna lose chickens unless you get a guard dog or burro or maybe a llama. It is hard enough to keep them safe inside a fence. Sheez, it has been a tough year for these mountain chickens, I tell ya!

And I know that. It is just harder to protect from dogs then the other wildlife. We are fairly secure against coyotes and whatnot. I am just going to have to get a less sociable dog. And I am ok with some loss, they are not pets for me.

The Pyrenees sounds good to me, does DH like dogs?

Is this the neighbor with the chicken processing equipment?
Good luck with the dog issue! :hugs

No different neighbors. This one lives a couple miles to the southwest :/ He accepts dogs, understands their value. But he really doesn't like big dogs (I do not either, but differentiate between farm dogs and other large breeds) That and we already have two, though the one is not technically ours. He FIL dog and considers us part of the territory.

Mornin' friends! Sounds like the whole country is getting a break and a little warm up! We are finally melting here. We still have some snow that became ice on the ground. Yesterday I slipped on it. Went to grab the back on DD's car to keep from falling and sliced off part of my finger! Clean off! Ouch! Right, back to the weather...supposed to hit 41 here today.
