Chickens are omnivores, so they must have meat protein. But their chicken feed provides that, so if you are feeding them chicken feed they are fine. I provide chicken feed and then supplement with kitchen scraps, and occasionally meat, on top of whatever they find free ranging (which at the moment is Mulberries)

Back in the day, people would choose the organ meats over the muscle. Technically, organ meats are more nutritious. We don't tend to eat them as much now. So they did used to be a treat, before modern times, and organ meats are sweetmeats.
That, and they don't store well. You kinda have to eat these not long after butcher. They don't even freeze super great.

Unfortunately hubby has small pallet. Hamburger, bread and Dr. Pepper are his staples. LOL He's hard headed and refuses to change his ways. Salad is my staple, I share the head of lettuce with my hens, and the extras of the carrots and cucumbers. But I called all that treats and was keeping it limited. I'll start considering it food and give them more.

So, I guess I'll put liver on the shopping list. Hubby is going to take one look at that, clock his head to the side and say, "Wwwwhhhhhaaaattttt?" And then I'm going to have to explain sweetmeats to him in the meat department and how our chickens are going to live it. Heads are going to turn, lol!

I had liver and onions once when I was younger. I'm pretty sure I liked it, weird thinking I'll never eat it again.

Yeah, I knew it was much more nutritional, but I cannot get past the texture. Chickens like it

If you can find a farmer nearby you might be able to get liver for a deal. It is hard to sell. Before I got the chickens dh just had the butcher throw away the offals because no one buys it.

Yeah, my mom fixed liver, apples, and onions for us once, I didn't care for it. Never had it again. Thanks for the info. My phone is messing up, I'm typing messages in my memo, copying them and then paste-ing them into this chat. I gotta go figure this out. And take water, ice, and watermelon to the chickens. Catch y'all later, have a great day!
