Really? People around here give them away to get them off the ground! They are very hard to crack.
You have to sell them to a processor. They are hard to open and then they need some processing. Most the walnuts in processed food, like ice cream, are black walnuts

We used to pick them and sell them when I was growing up up further North in California

We probably have a lot of walnut trees. And hickory trees, tulip trees, paw paw trees, pine trees...etc.

My parents used to collect gunney sacks full of black walnuts. They'd wait until the green skins turned black, then dad would drive over the sacks with his car a few times. The green skins would come off and the walnuts crack open (at least, that was the plan). It was our job (bro, sis & me) to pick the nuts out. We'd have contests to see who could pick the most.

Let me tell you, black walnuts are hard to pick out! But Mom could sure make the best fudge and baked goods out of those things.

Did that violate child labor laws!

Great family bonding :woot

No violation back then...that was back when the parents were the law!
Mine too!

Once Mom told us to go down to the creek and pick blackberries. We worked very hard at it too. Imagine our disappointment when we were told that we had to go back a pick more- that was not enough for canning yet.

Of course like you, we did get the goodies later

Morning Cafe, enjoy your Saturday!
