You must get a bunch that all look alike. Do not name them. Have another group for pets. If you provide a good life for them as they grow, at least they have that. Most meat chickens do not.

That's true and those are all good ideas but I still think I would get way too attached haha

Maybe not though. I might try it someday.

My current chickens are pets.

And yes, at least they would have a better life. Partly why I would want to do it. But maybe I could at least buy locally.

But I am even attached to my fish lol

name them like meals maybe lunch, dinner, desert, breakfast... you get the drift

Hahaha good idea!

I like to see our farm sort of like it's own ecosystem. We'd rather be connected to our food, so while it's not the easiest thing to do, we also feel good about where our food comes from and how it works into creating a more sustainable farm.
I think a lot of people also don't want to or won't think about what happens to the male chicks when they order females only.

Good point and well said. Everything you said makes sense but maybe I could buy local or something. Or raise them eventually.

But I get attached to things way too easily.

And yeah, I admit I used to be one of those people but I think I found out shortly after or before I got my chicks and it came up again recently when I saw a what I thought was stupid billboard but actually accurate. Although I think my hatchery is slightly better but idk

I want to try meat birds but 1. My mom thinks it's disgusting and/or mean etc. and 2. I'm not sure I could handle it myself raising cute babies then killing them. :(
They are food!

When they spend some time in the freezer, they look like chicken from the store

I may raise some meat chickens at some point. I bet they taste great, and you know what goes into their systems. Probably much better for your health.
I am not as much of a softie as i used to be. Killed a lot of varmints that needed killing. Still not fond of killing livestock but i could if i had to.

Yeah I know but I find it different when I raise it or know the animal.

For instance, one time my uncle got a ham for Christmas or his New Year's party from the neighbor's and supposedly it was the best ham ever. So later I snuck in and tried a tiny little bite (i wouldn't eat it at first and they do a buffet thing) but I spat it out. Reason being earlier neighbor/friend had been showing pictures of him or maybe he had shown pics way before the party when they got him and he was the cutest little black and white piglet sooo adorable and they named him Kevin Bacon :lau

Well anyway, he was so freaking cute that I just couldn't eat him. And I'd never even met the stupid pig before.

So I just feel like if I raised my own animals it would be wayyyy worse.

Or maybe it's only bad with cows or pigs and cute/fluffy things as opposed to like 50 chickens or whatever??

But still.

I know, it's weird and stupid, especially because factory farmed animals are treated wayyyyyy worse, but if I know the animal I can't but if I didn't see it or it's face somehow it's different? Even though it's not.

KD, you are young and have not been exposed to it. Takes time to harden up.

Yes! Most were not raised with raising and processing Farm animals and hunting like I was

Thanks! I suppose that's true

Although there are young people that can and are doing it. But maybe they were raised with it.

I was not, we have 2 grocery stores and McDonald's within like 2 minutes of the house and more grocery stores, regular stores, fast food, resteraunts, a little bit further but all still within 10-20 mins so I never really needed to think about processing or anything cause we just bought from the grocery stores and cooked or bought fast food or ate out or had microwave meals sometimes, etc. Etc.

Oh and we have a pizza place a few minutes away too

I grew up on farm we never butchered horses but everything else we raised was for food one way or another if you wanted to eat you had to feed, water, clean whatever it was
times it bugged me but not to way I didn't eat that was life
