BYC Café

Anyone want some hot chocolate? Dad and I just had some. Got the kind with the little marshmallows and without. We had them with them but the ones in it are rather small so I bought a bag of mini marshmallows to add to it. :D also added whipped cream and a little bit of milk and it was delicious :D :drool

On a bit of a sugar high now though :lau

Ah okay that makes sense. Do you like the leghorns? And that’s true!! I am sure they will be fine!! I didn’t mean to sound negative or bash the breed or whatever, a lot of people really like them!! They seem like a good breed. Just for me, I have a small flock and mostly pets but we are looking to add some more layers as our birds are 3 years old, and only have limited room, so for me I had to prioritize and narrow it down to the best layers and/or breeds I really want. One day I do really want to try Wyandottes but also because we have a small flock and have experience with bully hens, I didn’t really want more breeds that could potentially be bullies. A lot of people say that theirs are not, seems about 50/50, but I didn’t want to risk it. Which is disappointing as they are beautiful. But I think I am going to go with Partridge Rock, Speckled Sussex, Easter Egger, Delaware, and White Leghorn. That’s down from the 10 I had ha thinking of adding a New Hampshire Red back in too but idk. We current have 1 Barred Rock, 2 Black Australorps, 2 Buff Orpingtons (was 3), and 2 Easter Eggers. I really love the Rock and she is intelligent and a good layer so I want to try a different color Rock, really like the Partridge Color, and then I’ve been wanting to try Speckled Sussex for years, and the rest, we decided we wanted to try to mix up the egg colors so we know who is laying and we love having the green and blue eggs and personalities of our EEs so figured we’d add another one. Haven’t hit order yet. Might try to pick up some ISA Browns from TSC too when they get them in as they are supposed to be excellent layers but they have a minimum of 6 so idk.
I have 7 different breeds.. 2 are Australorps but different colors.. so 8 birds.. anyway, my Wyandotte has always been a bully and pretty scary/flighty.. but she has gotten better.. I think it’s since she started laying regularly... but she is still a bully at times.

Yeah, my Australorps used to be real bullies and still can be but I think since having a bigger coop and run they are happier. I think they are just a breed that needs a lot of space. And I think laying definitely calmed them down too. My Australorps used to be kind of flighty and mean with me too but now they are kind and one of the only ones that squat lol but yeah, I decided the looks of the Australorps weren’t worth all the negatives I had heard about them. Ended up ordering another Easter Egger, a Partridge Rock, a Speckled Sussex, a Delaware, and a White Leghorn.

I like my Autralorps okay.. one of them can be a bully too though... but I was actually talking about my Wyandotte...
Although, my black Aussie is pretty friendly but my blue one is a bit bullyish and not as friendly.
I guess you really never know.. everyone can be different.
My Barnevelder is my absolute fave and is the sweetest thing!!

Congratulations on making your choices! Nice mix. I think you'll be pleased.
I can now confess that I actually ordered 16 chicks as I got the Meal Maker too!

You can order only five at a time?? I thought you had to order like 25 so that they stay warm?

Meyer’s minimum is actually only 3! That’s one of the reason I like them is that they don’t have the 15 or 25 minimums most other hatcheries have and no small order charges (though their prices are a little bit higher). Plus they are the closet hatchery to me; they’re in Ohio. But their minimum of 3 starts in April and goes through November and then from December through March their minimum is only 8. It used to be 15 from December through March but they recently lowered it to 8. And when it’s cold they usually include a heat pack for free.

I like my Autralorps okay.. one of them can be a bully too though... but I was actually talking about my Wyandotte...

Oh yeah, I saw that you were talking about the Wyandotte but was just making comparisons to my one bully hen that I have, kind of as a reason why I didn’t get a Wyandotte. Sorry for the confusion.
