The gooseberries here came from the UK.
Out of all the fruit bushes, they were the most neglected and every year I've been here they flourished and fruited. It's why I planted some outside my house. You just need to water them every now and then and keep the badgers away from them because they seem to be rather partial to them.
The chickens will eat them but only to annoy you.

Well right now they are soaking overnight in a brain slurry type mixture

I read that each animal has enough brains to tan its hide.
