One of the nails in the UK coffin was privatising the utility companies.
Here in the US, it is mixed. There is a place in the NY city area that went to government owned from private. It worked out great there. Safety is up and cost is down. There have been several others with similar stories.

Here Sacramento has Smud and Redding has its own power utility too. Prices are lower for both.

PGE seems to have cut maintenance for shareholder profit.

I think anything that is privatized detracts from the greater good; schools, prisons and hospitals come to mind immediately.
It's been a disaster in the UK with regard to the services provided. A few people have made a lot of money out of it.
One of the services that got privatised that's going to bite back soon is the water supply companies.
the money that should have gone into the infrastructure went to shareholders instead and the infrastructure is failing badly in the cities.

I am very happy that we have City water here. There are some places down south that are private and the water is terrible!

We have city water also. There are a couple of places here with private companies and either their prices are exorbitant or that plus the systems are failing with sewage leaks, etc. Not good.

We have city water but no sewage. A private company does the tanks here and it’s a pain getting them out.

Oh yeah! We now have a big gas tax for petrol to support the infrastructure.
