It does seem we have some traits in common Mr sourland.
I'm not sure whether others here would necessarily consider this a good thing.

In my experience it is, indeed, an acquired taste - frequently not for the general public.

I've found the strike site. I would say it was a weasel. The weasels here are responsible for the majority of the chick deaths. I feel for mum but she's young and will get to hatch more. I still beleive if Blue Spot had still been alive so would the chick. Nothing I can do. I'll have to wait and see who takes over as senior hen. Hinge is getting ready to sit. I'll try and move her after day three.

I just like to know if possible IM. I sleep easier knowing. We/I/they lose about 60% of the chicks hatched. I don't know how that compares to jungle fowl or semi feral breeds but I doubt it's far off normal. When you've seen mums just walk away from chicks half out of their shells peeping away madly, or watched them carry on when one, or two go missing you tend to look at things differently.
Weasels have to eat as well. It would be good if they didn't eat the chicks but then again it's hard to condemn them when we eat chickens to.

I agree. I don't want predators to take my birds. If it happens, they need to eat and were given an opportunity. Kind of hurts the heart though.

I think it is human nature to want to protect what is theirs. Which means making it as difficult for predators as possible.

Well I’ve been taking care of the family since everyone seems to be down with the flu. My old dog is acting funny. He’s 9 so I figure he’s winding down. Thought I might have to butcher a duck but that solved itself when she decided to get up and start acting normal.
