BYC Café

Thanks Sean and Debby.
Last night they were all waiting outside their old coop run door trying to get in. I was a chicken herder driving them to the pop door of the new coop. Fabio kept running back and forth around the sides of the coop trying to get back after all his girls went in. Not too sharp, that boy.
I had to manually place everyone on the roost.
Man oh man was there a LOT of poop on the poop board!! So much easier to sift it out with the kitty litter scoop and toss it in a bucket.

Good luck today, Debby! It'll be great, I'm sure.
You might need to lock them into the new coop for several days to re home them. They will re home eventually but often you have to move them in each night for a bit more than a week

My mowing season started back at the end of February, :barnieI've already nowed 5 times.
I started mowing in March. I will need to start the sprinklers today or tomorrow

I hate to lock them in when the weather is so nice so I don't mind playing shepherd.
Yesterday, three eggs were in the new coop and 7 in the old. That's not too shabby. One of the girls happily jumped up to the new nest box to lay her egg when I was feeding them this morning. She was one of the ones that laid in the old coop yesterday. I'll see how it goes.

At least I don't have to water, we've been pretty lucky this year with rain fall.

We have a heat wave here not. Yesterday was 85 and today will be over 90. The north wind dries us out fast too.

We will likely get less than a half of an inch of rain from now until October. Most months will have 0 precipitation.

Can't 'like' that...I thought where you are, y'all get more rain than that?

We are a very dry place in the Summer and Fall. It is something that other climates do not understand and why California has a long history of water wars

I'm not there obviously ;) but that running around the coop stuff here at least isn't because they don't know how to get in. The roosters have done this with each change of coop and each new position of the coop. Bear in mind I move the coops around.
Cheepy used to do this every night.
I conducted a bit of an experiment here a long time ago when I still lived in the main house.
There had been a few discussions on how much more intelligent humans were than chickens.
You get a lot of that when you live with academics who deserve a round of applause when they lace their boots up without lacing both together.:p
As mentioned, I move the coops here. Sometimes quite a few metres and the door may face in the opposite direction to the way it was.
The fridge freezer here has a 'hang either side door. I swapped the hinges over so the door handle was on the opposite side. Even after a month of it being like that people were still fumbling about to find the handle where it used to be.
It takes the chickens here on average one day to learn that their coop has been moved and the door is now on the back rather than the front.;)

Morning Cafe folk! Jut checking in to let y'all know that I'm sitting here waiting to hear from the vet school. They will let me know when I can bring my Peekaboo hen in. She started overly drinking yesterday, so I brought her inside to observe. Had to give her water through the night and take it back away to keep her from leaking out the mouth when she bent over! I studied on the internet and knew to check her abdomen. Sure enough it is full of fluid! Very likely a reproductive problem. She is one of my best layers, and one of my tamest,in your pocket babies.

Meanwhile my Dominique, Sophie has been in an inside cage with lethargy and smelly diarrhea; getting electrolytes and probiotics as was recommended.
Please just keep us in your thoughts today!
I will Becca, Peekaboo and Sophie.:hugs
Your not having a lot of luck.

That is interesting.
The other interesting thing about this is, the entrance to both coops is on their East sides.
Why did the girls go in but he didn't?
