The dementia stuff doesn’t bother me, but I know it’s really hard to deal with. I kid you not, this is me & my folks in a restaurant when my dad was still alive;

Dad “What are you gonna get Char?”
Me “I think I’ll get the patty melt”
Dad “Oh! What’s on that?”
Me “It’s like a burger on rye bread with cheese & grilled onions.”
Dad “Oh. Ok.... What are you gonna get Char?”
me: “I’m thinking about a patty melt.”
Dad “Oh! What’s on that?”
Me “It’s a burger on rye bread with cheese & grilled onions.”
Dad “Hmmmm... What are you gonna get Char?”
Me: I don’t know. Maybe a patty melt.
Dad “Oh! What’s on that?”
Me “It’s like a burger on rye bread with cheese & grilled onions.”
Dad “That sounds good.... Char, what are you gonna get?”
Mom “SHES TOLD YOU 50x ALREADY!!!”
Me (giving my mother the look of death) I’m thinking about having a patty melt.
Dad “What’s on that?”

It’s my MILs dementia I worry about. She’s still physically active & she’s gonna be one of those people who go out for a walk & get lost. It scares me to death.

My MIL has dementia as well. She had keys to the car that nobody knew about. We found out she went grocery shopping, bought a steak, a bottle of wine, some charcoal and had herself a bbq.

Last week she decided she needed to get some exercise so she went for a bike ride on the beach...we got her one of those Tile tracker things so when she leaves, she still takes her keys, she won't be lost even if she gets lost.

Yes, when I was taking care of my Aunt in TN, I told her I would be back in 10 minutes, as soon as I collected eggs. I came back to the door wide open, dogs running all over the yard, Aunt outside in the cold ( no shoes or jacket) talking to the mailman. I told my parents to come get her, I just couldn't do it any more. She needed a lock down facility.

Yeah that’s a killer! :he We never had to worry about my dad wandering off because he was physically in bad shape. He never forgot who we were, but he couldn’t retain anything new. I miss him!

My MIL looks great & you’d never know by looking at her how bad hers is. She wakes up every morning in her own bed & has no clue where she’s at. It’s so sad! She is an amazing woman with a wicked sense of humor & it’s all lost. :(

When I was asked to help the folks scary part my step Dad Wayne one day I had gone to the store get back to frantic Ma she says he went for a walk in woods but has not come back there was a green belt on one side of the property he came out 3 houses down from theirs they new him brought him home boy he had the sheepish grin on his face
I finally got to breath again

Thats terrifying! MIL was told she’s not allowed to drive & she forgot. Now she’s getting too scared to drive because she can’t remember where’s she’s going or how to get there. She broke her foot & didn’t realize she was supposed to wear the cast & none of her family made her. She messed up her meds so bad last year that she almost died. I called my in-laws asking them to check on her because she sounded bad & they all blew me off. I finally threatened them & said she sounded like death & that I was calling 911 from 1,600 miles away & would have the EMTS get her. To say they were pissed at me for telling them how to take care of THEIR mother was an understatement. When they finally took her in the doctor almost admitted her to the ER she was so bad. Now DH calls her every Sunday & they do her meds together on FaceTime.:barnie

I gotta say, you guys are freaking me out. I know things are going to continue to get harder for me with DH but this all sounds horrible.

To change the subject; DH’s car got totaled a few weeks ago on his way to work. He’s been in a rental for 3wks while we deal with the insurance companies & today we finally drove home in a new car. It’s a majorly sweet ride & I’m torn between being jealous that he gets to have it & sick wondering how we’re going to pay for it. For today at least he’s a very happy boy!

There are things that can help. We got that Tile thing, the pro model is good up to about half a mile. We're going to get a Spytec personal GPS for her too which is much better and brings us more peace of mind but getting her to carry it may be a challenge. If someone is there to keep it charged and slip it in her purse or attach it to her bike it's worth it.
As for the day to day, I haven't had that experience.
Have you heard anything about the study?
