I don't think it's one commonly used in the U.S. At least not the parts I've lived in.

I think it comes from building. Good houses were built with bricks. So, if you're a brick you help hold the house up. The other London version is 'well solid'.
One does risk the possibility of misunderstanding when speaking to some people and receiving a slap for your troubles.
