BYC Café

Good morning, Café.
It's supposed to rain today with gusting winds coming in tonight.
I've got a pullet with a slow crop to deal with and one of my EE pullets went broody 2 days ago.
And I'm very concerned about Draco. She's walking around crouched down. I think this is a rather nasty first adult molt.
Dance a dance to the feather growing gods for her.

Morning Dobie! Are you going to let your EE hatch a batch? Poor Draco...I always thought molting must be a miserable feeling.

I have zero broodys. My chickens are all under 9 months. This is my first hatch ever, I used my own fertile eggs. I wish I had a broody because it seems easier.
Huh. You can borrow some of mine. I've got 14 pullets that just turned 27 weeks old. Three have gone broody. I've got one in the crate now.

I think you need some of FCs grandma's coffee this morning, Debby! Let her hatch?! No way! My coop is full. I need to let some of the hens go and Barb's two boys. They are thinking about breeding and I'll have to lock them in the brooder to keep the rest of the flock happy when that starts. The 27 week old girls are starting to put the run on them the way the hens did Captain.

What breed are they?
Both the Cuckoo Maran pullets went broody and one of the EEs is now.
I also had my RIR, BA and PBR hens go broody this past summer. The PBR is the one that broke me and got to hatch 3 chicks.

More coffee is always a good idea :p

It's a problem with mid year pullets. While the winter eggs are handy, the broodiness is inconvenient.
A couple of guys from the chicken club run a year on , year off system so they don't have to deal with pullet broodiness every year.
Watching the moulting here would suggest that the first full moult is the worst. I've got three having their first moult and they look totally pissed off.

On the plus side, hens going broody is a sign of good flock management I have been told.
