BYC Café

I do decorate a bit. It's the winter solstice after all.:p
I cook for Christmas, even if I'm visiting, much to my daughters irritation when her husband, her husbands father and I ban women from the kitchen.
Even if I spend Christmas day on my own I cook something special........how special it turns out is another matter.
The one day a year I drink alcohol is Christmas. I'm pretty much legless by the end of the day. It doesn't take much. Each year I buy or get given a bottle of single malt Scotch whiskey and that's what I drink. I've got four bottles from earlier years so I'm not very good at it.
I wish someone would ban me from the kitchen

I think it's great you guys don't do Christmas gifts or don't go overboard. That's not what it's supposed to be about. We did a bit much last year and have chosen to scale way back. We drew names between our family of 5. Kids are all adults anyway! I prefer functional gifts, like say...a new vacuum :fl My husband doesn't think that should be considered a gift, though.

And a good morning to all :highfive:

DH and I would always buy a coveted tool as a joined Christmas gift to ourselves. We have a nice Dewalt table saw, a compound miter Hitachi chop saw, a wet compound sliding saw for cutting tile and we bought the Dewalt pancake compressor and some finish nailer guns at a Christmas auction one year. :love

That's awesome! Auctions can be great for so many different things. You can never have too many tools.

These days it would be difficult to cope with all the religions in the extended family anyway.
It's different when people have children. It would be a bit harsh to not do whatever was tradition where you lived. My niece and nephew were a bit shocked here when others didn't really do Christmas. Three Kings day is the main festival here.
I do think in general the scaling back of the gifts and a greater concentration on what the festival is supposed to be about is a good idea whatever ones culture/religion.
