PS yes we buy/exchange gifts or gift cards for Hanukkah. Traditionally kids would get small items like fountain pen or coins(no Krugerands) as gifts. You can imagine how that went over. No actually we exchange presents somewhat and wrap them (yes, there is Hanukkah wrapping paper.) Business knows how to reap customers.
My grandmother (mother's side) was born on Christmas day, so my mother always celebrated HER birthday with fancy dinner etc. When I asked why grandpa didn't get a dinner and celebration - she got huffy.
My mom always made her own rules and never compromised. She and her mom, were fantastic cooks. Ma had NO sense of humor, grandma had an abundant one. She was always laughing.
I think my sense of humor comes from her. Though she thought people falling down was hysterical, I guess it depended on how they fell or what they fell from. Also if they had funny hat or anything else that caught her eye. She'd laugh till tears rolled down her leg, and then laugh at that. Gosh I miss her.
