BYC Café

Even if you could keep some sanity with that many kids, don't know how anyone could afford a family that size now. Too many mouths to feed, shoes to buy, school to pay for.
I don't know, either. I know a guy that has 11 and his wife homeschools them all. They had themselves a classroom full of kids

I would think just keeping track of their names would be rough.

Good morning, all! Thanks for the coffee and breakfast, Sean!

Sorry to hear about your boy, Margie. Hopefully it doesn't hit him too hard. We've got hospital restrictions right now because of the flu :hmm

-2°F this a.m. and supposed to be a slow warm up. It was about 15° in the barn, so the resident chickens were plum happy to be milling around :)

4th baby of the day (11pm) ended with a prolapsed cow. Our vet lives a little over an hour away, so he got there after midnight and had her cleaned and stitched up by 2am. Thank goodness he's reliable. Baby was sucking not long after and Mama was up this morning and looking like she was going to be okay. Poor girl.
Good farm vets are wonderful.

Good morning, Cafe. I've brewed another pot of coffee. Late start for me.
Sarge is on his way to his new home and I'm so very happy for the boy. His father was giving me all kinds of attitude when I went into the run. He was flaring his hackles and pecking my boot so he got the ol' "squash and scoop". I held him while Sarge's new owner collected him.
I did not ask any money for Sarge, I just wanted him to go to a good home. But they gave me two gifts for him! A mulled cider scented candle and a lovely red rooster trivet! :love That was completely unnecessary but much appreciated.

Well done DL.:bow
It's hard here to place a cockerel. Sometimes if I give away a pair it works.

Are you the resident midwife Meg?
Well, not exactly. I have helped pull calves before, but never on my own :) If it's really cold (freezing tails, ears, feet - cold) or there's a problem, like last night, I generally wield towels and a blow dryer to get the babe dried off. Which, if you haven't attempted to dry a fresh newborn covered in fur, it's much more challenging than you'd think :p We've got a pretty good set-up for a warming room, though. Good facilities make everything much easier.
