Lewis Wright The practical poultry keeper: a complete and standard guide to the management of poultry, whether for domestic use, the markets, or exhibition Cassell & Co., London and elsewhere, 1985. I discovered it at Gladstone's library, and managed to pick up a copy online. It went through many, many editions (a reliable sign of how well it was received). But that can lead to problems when citing specifics because he was updating between editions. Mine is 23rd edition, and it does not repeat some of the things I noted from the earlier (undated) edition that Gladstone owned...
I also find a lot of good sense in The Hon.Mrs Arbuthnott The henwife: her own experience in her own poultry-yard Jack, Edinburgh, 1868, which is available free online as a pdf from Cornell Uni. https://archive.org/details/cu31924003132929

Thanks Perris. I'll see about getting a copy. I've got a couple of good chicken books but some of the old European guides are very good and cover a different style of keeping to that which seems popular on many of the chicken sites.
It seems sometimes the knowledge base is getting smaller.
I've been very impressed with the knowledge of the chicken enthusiasts here. It isn't written knowledge more often than not and is passed from generation to generation.

We had some pretty strong bursts of rain yesterday and last night but nothing to cause flooding here, thankfully.
Discussions have begun on getting DH down to stay with his kids and one of his sisters for a three week vacation! I can't wait!!! (I really need a break.)
