BYC Café

Areas are fenced and stocked with naturally raised cottontail rabbits. Predation is a constant problem. Also this is the time of year when a 'die off' frequently happens. Earlier trials at this club did not show a very good population of young rabbits. I know that they also have a constant weasel problem.
What kind of fence(hole size) around how much area?
"Naturally raised" by someone else....then hopefully they reproduce once released?
Tough balance to maintain I bet.

Heavy duty one inch mesh plastic coated wire. This club has about 80 acres fenced, my home club has 53 acres fenced. Both enclosures are equipped with hot wire. Both clubs mow/plant feed strips and provide rabbit pellets year round. "Naturally raised" as in born and raised in the enclosures. Tough balance indeed. Just as everything loves to eat our birds, the same creatures love to eat cottontails. GHO and other raptors are our biggest problem along with the possibility of a poor year for reproduction.

I guess they weren't nailed or screwed to studs?
You wanted to buy and install new boxes anyway, right? ;)
Right. Not nailed to the studs. No. I did NOT plan to replace boxes. Just the 63 yr old devices.
First winter in 7 years I haven't had a batch of pullets.

Just that lone pullet?

I'm exhausted.
We got the tear off done on both stories on the south side of the roof.
Got the I&W barrier and underlayment on up to the ridge.
We weren't able to get a shingle ladder. Went down to the rental place 20 before closing, walked in the back door, lights off, can't find anyone. Finally the owner shows up and tells us that he shut everything down. WTH? You don't shut down until you CLOSE!!
Now I'll have to lug the shingles up the ladder a 1/2 bundle at a time.

The good news is I'll sleep like the dead tonight.
