Stories from my Chicken Village.
Was a pileated woodpecker tapping on the coop shed this morning.
Hear this taptaptap and wondered, didn't go out to see until the chickens all sounded off with alarm calls. Walked into the run and WP flew off back of shed.
It came back later and was scouting the roof and eaves.
God they are magnificent creatures, I still yelled at it to get of my shed.

Went out to do chicken chores and found all the youngsters on the coop floor eating and drinking out of the big birds gear,Willie was on the floor too, all the other birds were up on the roost.
Made me smile.

Willie didn't help out the cockerel that got 'stuck' in the big run yesterday.
Hear a bunch of squawking and odd flapping, finally went out to see what was what and one of cockerels was on a high roost, took me a minute to realize who it was because they are getting so big. He was in the sun and panting, he must have been knackered because I was able to grab him pretty easily and transport him back to the coop.

Any chance that carpenter bees are 'drilling' into your shed? They got into one of my lofts, and the woodpeckers soon located them. Pileated woodpeckers are truly magnificent. Since all of the damaged trees by Hurricane sandy, and now the dying ash trees there has been a population explosion around here. I see them daily at the beagle club.

I had to rescue a hen stuck in the nest box this week. One of her talons was stuck. I had to carefully get her loose while she was flapping around!
