Well now! Walking up the cabin trail and stumbling upon a 200 lb black bear will definitely get your heart pumping! At first it darted up towards the road then it hung a right and shot back down through the woods running parallel to the creek.
I am proud to report that both Bella and Skittles just stopped in their tracks when I kept saying No, No, No over and over.
What an adrenaline rush!!
Skittles is now fully wired and zipping across the forest floor trying to trace the track that bear took. Bella, as expected, is glued to my right leg.

How is your little furry princess doing by now?
Driving us crazy. It's day 5 post surgery, and keeping her somewhat subdued is difficult. She deals with the collar fine, but really wants to get her activity level back into high gear. Give me 2 more days, and incision should be relatively strong. :fl

His presence seems to be enough to prevent the otherwise nasty teenage behaviour.
That thought crossed my mind. I really should spend more time observing as I have in the past years.

How is Willie doing now? You wrote earlier that you were concerned about him making it slaughter this autumn. I assumed to keep one of the cockerels to replace him. Or will you try to keep Willie with a junior male for a while?
He seems better, I think that long spur was giving him problems, but since it broke and healed up he's been more active.

So many options. This is the first time I've hesitated to slaughter an older bird, my passion for chickeneering for food is fading. Not sure I wan't to 'break in' a new flock cock.

Goodness Tonya! You sure know how to keep us entertained!

Glad the bear left you all untouched :hugs

My 14 y/o Subaru is making a new noise. I *think* it's the muffler, but am not sure. It came on suddenly, so I canceled my trip to town, just in case, and drove back home safely. Having a breakdown on the back roads near home is one thing; something on the highway scares the willies out of me.

Gotta get moving and go pick my first green beans! :thumbsup

And feed the mosquitos. :duc

Willie should do most of the hard work.

Not me! I've run into them before.

Unless there are cubs involved or you corner one, their instinct is to run away from you.
The third time I ran into a bear I never saw it. I was running three of my Dobies and had just come off the first wooded trail and into a clearing where the power lines went through when I heard a cub start screaming BEHIND me. It wasn't far away and two of my three dogs were out of sight. Eeeep! I had no idea where mom was. So I started making a huge racket and called in all the dogs. We kept moving forward on the trails and by the time we came back through to get to the car, no more signs of the cub.

I got Astrid cleaned up. She had minor poopy butt. She was super mad at me for the bath and Fabio was ready to jump in and be her knight in shining armour.
While she was settling down and preening I tore apart the nest box to make a new wet nest for her.
I harvested the moss off soil this time as it was more plush than the stuff off the logs then topped it with chopped straw.

When she came back, she pecked at the chopped straw and tried to walk away. I closed her into the Ward, gathered up a handful of the straw I'm using in the nest boxes and what she had been setting on and sprinkled it on the nest.
She got back on and settled in. They really hate all change.
