I finished Prodigal Summer last night. Here's how I know it was a good book: I didn't want it to end.

Here's how I know it was a great book: It ended in exactly the right place. Even though there were a lot of semi-loose ends, it ended very well.

I definitely will read it again.

The little pistol with the fat mouth who is the only one roosting with the bigs while the other 3 roost on the poop boards in a cluster.

Poor little Tink in a hard molt. She lost a couple of primaries last night but still flew up to the boards.

Fabio has FINALLY grown back his muffs and beard and didn't flog me this year and break off his foot feathers
. Ignore his very thin hackles and missing sickle feathers on his tail

And another chicken exploded last night. Cayuga is officially on the molting bench and out of the egg laying game for the year.

Can anyone tell I needed a little chicken therapy this morning?

I let the four little silkie in with the bigger bantys.
The darn frizzle started to peck heads hard enough to hurt them. There was a dog crate in the garage with shavings stuck it in there...

One of the pullets roosts on the poop board, on the end where the alpha hen roosts. The bottom hen (Lark the meanie) is on the other end. The other two pullets still make a cuddle huddle in the corner.

They have their own roost. It's a little lower than the adults' roost, but the pullets don't use it. Not at night anyway!

A second good morning and pot of coffee. Goodness knows where the first ended up . Hectic here this morning between house cleaners and two guys working on the furnace. Maggie Mae was crated for most of the 'visit'. Then she got to play with the HVAC guys. Later she vomited her breakfast. Excitement ? Hope so. Now she seems okay so I will feed her supper in two portions.

That's true! But one of the things that made this book so good is the writing. There were passages that I read, then reread, because the sentences gleamed, they were so polished.
