BYC Café

When I went out to lock up tonight at just past 7:45, I startled Fabio who was all alone in the run taking a late bath.

This morning a couple of minutes after the flock cleaned up their seed, Ace sent up a shriek from across the pen and I heard the flock flapping and stampeding back to the run. I looked out the window in time to see Ace leading the way.
Scream and run. So not macho.
When Fabio alerts he stands his ground to be the first to get picked off to save the ladies.

Afternoon, cafe folks! Still wet and cold here as well; three inches of snow this morning. Most of it is now melted. As much as I wish the weather was nicer, at this point I think I will just be grateful for the moisture.

Is anyone else waiting on hatchery orders? I get to pick mine up next month and am a bit stir-crazy over it. It's been several years since I've had over fifteen birds, so I'm unreasonably excited. (And slightly nervous.)

Hope the sauerkraut turns out well!
My order got canceled. Birds i wanted are not available this year.

I told this story just to demonstrate the distance Ace needs to travel to reach Fabio's status as flock leader.
Ace was basically doing a Chicken Little impersonation. There was nothing to be concerned about. I think he saw a blue jay or a crow fly over. Both of which Fabio learned long ago are no threat to the flock so he just watches.
Yeah, I looked it up online. Dad takes off and goes back to his wild, carefree ways. :lau
Can you seriously blame him?
I once saw 6 young racoons and their mother clinging to a tree trunk. All of them no higher than 6 feet off the ground. All I could see as we approached were all these little glowing things and we had no idea what it was. It was so cool to drive close enough to finally make out all those babies and mom climbing the tree! Even if I was the mom, I'd take off and go back to my wild ways with that many kids...

Good morning Cafe. Thanks for the coffee Shad.

There is a fire in the stove. We went three whole days with no need for a fire. Now we'll have at least three straight days where we'll have to have one.

I am gearing up for the seasonal room build so I'm working on redrawing the blueprint with material designation to make the build go as smooth as possible. I mentioned I was doing this and I got two volunteers from work to help strip the roof, load shingles and help put down the Ice & Water, underlayment and haul up the new shingle bundles.

MY boss offered me a big tarp he has. It's something like 20x60! I asked if I could cut it in half and he said, no problem. Trying to manage a tarp that big my myself could easily get me knocked off the roof in a good wind.
