Meh.DL, did you get a decent start?
That head scratching time can seem like a progress killer, but better now than re-doing later.Meh.
We got the posts/beams up after cutting away the roof deck and truss tails then erected scaffolding and fussed around with what pitch we were going to use for the room.
After Joe left I templated the birds mouth to determine where it needed to be to intersect the underside of the existing roof deck where the existing sub-fascia is where the overhang won't be so long that we can't get a corner gutter piece and downspout in on the other side where it's really close to the end of the house. I ended up right back to using an 8/12 pitch for the room against the 5/12 pitch of the house. Then I back calculated how high the ridge beam supports need to be and how to notch them and how long the rafters need to be cut.
We'll see how well I do tomorrow with the template rafter.![]()
The head scratching also keeps you up at night. But I remembered something important when I was scratching my head last night. The house has just under half inch thick plywood roof decking on it. But the addition is going to have shiplap for the roof deck and it's about 1/4" thicker. That means I have to drop my rafters on the addition 1/4" lower so that the decking all lines up at the valleys. I'll have to keep tweaking my birdsmouth template! That head scratching time can seem like a progress killer, but better now than re-doing later.
Have solved many 'problems' just before sleep, more often just after waking up.The head scratching also keeps you up at night.
