BYC Café

I need the coffee today, so thanks! Here's another pot on standby.

Waiting for the septic tank company to come and pump out our tank. No issues, just needs to be done.

Tomorrow, an asbestos abatememt company is coming to remove some old pipe from the old house. That's in preparation for burning it down, as a practice burn for the local fire department. We still need to get some more metal and planking off the roof.

On your property?
Yes. We bought 5 acres that adjoins ours, with an old farmhouse, a huge pole barn, a couple of other out buildings, and a fallen down barn. It was part of a farm, at one point. It went into foreclosure, and we got it for about $22K. We had ideas of fixing up the house and turning it into a rental.

When you buy a foreclosed property (DL, you might know all about this already), you can't do anything for a year, as the owner has that long to pay up and get it back. The guy was a hoarder, and when he left, he didn't close it up. Raccoons moved in, and the place was a big stinking mess.

We re-roofed the "bad" half of the roof with metal roofing, but ran out of time and vacation that year. Well, we should have spent the time to roof the rest.

This spring, DH wanted to fix the other side of the roof. It was in WAY worse shape than he guessed. I told him we would spend a crapton of money to fix it. It would have to be totally gutted, and who knows if we'd ever get it clean enough for someone to want to pay money to stay/live there. Remember the raccoons? They aren't particular where they poop.

So, demolition? $20K. Sheeeeeeiiiit. A friend suggested we call the local FD, see if they're interested in a practice burn. Yup, they are. We had to pay $850 for an asbestos inspection, $1800 for the removal. FD does their thing for free.

It's sad, as the old house was probably built in the early 1900s. I wish we had the equipment to safely deconstruct it and reclaim the lumber, but we don't. DH loves old farmhouses -- he grew up in one -- and this makes him both mad and sad. He didn't want to see it just continue to fall apart, and I said, no, we are not going to spend the $$ to fix up an old house for the raccoons.
