I'm disheartened to report that the presurgical pain is back at around 75% the level just before surgery.

I read the surgical notes.

The growth she removed, in addition to bone spurs on my vertebras and the ruptured disc fragments, was a "cyst formation and ligamentous overgrowth causing severe lateral recess stenosis at both L4-5 and L5-S1 levels".

She treated both the L5 and S1 nerve roots with Depo-Medrol before closing me up. That is the steroid that would have been injected into the space around the nerves had that been a possibility.

It wore off 28 to 30 days after the surgery. I've been experiencing increasing pain since then which has become bad enough as to very negatively affect my sleep for the last 4 nights. I'm again very limited in my walking.

I called the doctor's office yesterday morning and they prescribed a steroid step down dose that will last one week. That will get me to my surgeon post-op visit.

There is a possibility I may need to get that injection after all. But now with everything removed and the nerves no longer being impinged, I don't think it would be as excruciatingly painful as the first time it was attempted. But the nerves were severely compressed based on her surgical notes.

They're going to take quite some time to heal and they are again inflamed. That needs to be controlled if we're going to accelerate the healing process.

It is what it is. I'm having difficulty coming to terms to being back in the "waiting" frame of mind again. I was doing so damn well and felt human for the first time in years.

It's frustrating. But I trust my surgeon to guide me through this part of the healing process. I just need to make it to that appointment without spending most of the day crying on the couch, writhing in pain.
