BYC Café

Fabio is gone. HTG and C helped me.
This was what he looked like last night.

That's just too much. He was steadily declining and didn't deserve to continue like that.
He got to meet the next generation and his daughter is raising the boys that will try to fill his shoes. Good luck to them.
Poor fella. You did right by him.
Never easy.
:hugs

Morning Cafe. Coffee is ready.

The second batch of babies arrived yesterday. Fabio got to meet them before he had to go. I'm happy for that.

They are the black Ameraucanas. I order a dozen and got a baker's dozen. They are all doing well.

I tried to talk Astrid into taking care of them. It's just not hot enough yet for her to be thinking about raising babies. She was super gentle around them but uninterested.

I then thought maybe she'd change her mind if she felt them under her for the night so I put her back in the brooder with them last night and tucked 3 of the chicks under her. She was still sitting on them when I got there before dawn and at first didn't seem inclined to leave but she gently stood and stepped over them. One kid had her foot stuck in Astrid's undercarriage and I had to free her. Then Astrid just started trying to figure out how to get out. So I let her out. It couldn't hurt to try.

Most of the flock has come to see the new crew. The kids all visited the water bottle and had some food this morning before scampering back under the plate. I left the light on for them because it's going to be dreary and chilly for the next three days. I wish they had a mother.
