Ok, got the book from Wal-Mart, got out my yarn, and started to whip out the chain stitch. Pretty easy.

Now...what do I do? All the instructions show how to finish the row you crochet to the chain, but not how to start that first row.
I tried, and it looks terrible, it holds together, but not a pretty site.

I just want to make a square, maybe a couple of them and sew them together for a thicker potholder.

I'd like to make one like the pink square in the first pic of Mawchickkidie's. By the way, the squares are gorgeous!

Rafter, try this....(I am assuming you are using a G or H hook) chain 5 and slip stitch together into a circle..chain up 2 and hold the circle with your left hand, do 2 double crochets beside the chain up 2 you just did..then chain 2 and do 3 double crochets in the same space, that makes the corner, then chain 1 and make 3 dcs in the corner, chain 2 and 2 more dcs in the same corner, all the way around the square, then chain up 2 and repeat (you will have a space in the middle now and will need to do 3 dcs in that), keep that up until you have about 5 rounds...look at crochetcabana.com and you will see step by step pics.

My mother tried and tried to teach me to crochet, but I never got past the chain. Maybe I'll have to pick it up and try it again. Who has the etsy shop that sells those hats with the curlies?? I want to get one for the new baby since he/she is due in july and a matching one for dd, specially if the baby is a girl!
TIA!

Well, after watching me struggle with the turns and such, DH informed me he knew how to crochet when he was little. His Grandmother taught him. He remembered enough to show me how to turn. He just picked up an end of yarn and put that slip knot on the hook like he had been doing it every day. His tension wasn't any better than mine, but he got it through to me!!!

I didn't do so good on a square, I got a rectangle, but it didn't look too bad for a first try. Now, I wish it was winter, so I could sit and practice for hours in the evening. We just have too much to do while its light out in the evenings.

I plan on practicing as often as I can to get the hang of it.

You really should check the crochetcabana.com site becasue those step by step pictures help alot and then they also have some mini videos, most people that I personally know learned to crochet off that site, lol!! You'll do great!

And Sunny...did you suffer ego bruising from the 50th birthday thing? I have worried about it for nearly a year, it seems so OLD!!! 40's were sexy and cool, 30's were family, 20's were WILD!! but 50's...I don't know, my baby graduates high scholl in two weeks and my oldest just finished her 2nd year of college. I have 12 years until retirement with my job so I am still active in the work force for quite a while and my husband has several years before he can either, but will soon be empty nesting...but for my chickens, lol!!...really an odd time in my life and this 50 thing has not been an easy adjustment. Others I know just breezon on through it like nothing...guess I'll see how I do sunday and maybe laugh about all this anxiety later...maybe!!

That is so funny that your dh learned how to crochet from his grandma. My dh said he also learned from his grandma. He gets ticked everytime he thinks about his mom giving his GI Joe doll away and it had crocheted pants on him that he had made for it.

He said he worked really hard to make them to!

Keep practicing. I learned when I was little from my grandma, but never made a granny square until the last swap. The crochetcabana site helped alot. I got better as I went. As a matter of fact I wouldn't even share the first 10 squares that I made, so don't give up.

I like to use a H hook, but that's just me. It feels the most comfortable to me.

I would love to watch the video, but with this dinosaur of a computer and dial-up, it won't happen.

Now, don't anybody hurt themselves laughing...but here are pics of my second and third attempts at crocheting. My first was really bad and I took it apart and started over again.

Third try, much better, but tension is still not even.

This is fun, but I need to know which way y'all do this. Do you move your finger to wrap yarn around hook, or do you use the hook to grab the yarn? Would the correct term be yarn over?

My hand started cramping...I know I hold it all too tight. I really want to make every stitch so small & tight that I would never be able to get the hook out of it!

And the "50" thing....DH just turned 50 and I will do so in August also. I'm not worried about it, my bad year was 30.
I do realize however that my body and my mind do not think alike anymore.
My mind says "yeah, let's do that", and my body is screaming "NO, Let's NOT!!"

Thanks for the 50 encouragement Jean!! That first pic is....well...is....well..the second one is great!!!! And you move the yarn not hook it on the hook, your thumb on the left hand moves. You're doing great and bless you heart for uploading those, I just switched off dial up recently myself and it probably took 30 minutes or more for you to upload those two pictures!! You're doin great, keep it up!!!

Doin great Jean, I have learned though that the tight you make your work the harder it is to get the hook through as your going so don't make it too very tight and as you start getting used to the movements your grip will ease up and the next thing you know you will be whipping out left and right.

Well After a long time of looking for my notebook I have found where I stashed all ,my infor for the starting dates for the fall swap, Although just so you know I have already started the list and will continue it through to the sign up closing date on october 6th. then once sign-ups are closed the swap will run until November 1st and all square must be post-marked november 5, NO Later Than that. So let the sign Ups begin.

We will do 20 square same as last time, and for now I am running a poll as to what the color theme should be and here they are:
Merry Christmas
Autum leaves
Happy Halloween
scrap yarn party(my DH don't like my made up word)
Icy winter wonderland
cozy cabin.

So post here or pm me what theme you think we should do for the fall swap and I will periodicly post the percentages for the favorite theme.

And hopfully we will have a overall color theme picked be the time the swap rolls around.
