Well I am almost close to being done with the afghan and maybe by the time it is finished they will have my laptop fixed that way I could post better pics and send better emails and I could even make a youtube video for the thread on how to make a basic granny square. That would really be a big help for alot of us. Oh I can't wait! boy oh boy!

Well ladies I am feeling the effects of my allergy meds, i just hope this time the bath tub doesn't start growling at me again, Knowing my luck thought it would be the fridge instead. LOL Now I know i am losing it, well ladies I am off to my big nice fluffy bed, to watch ghost hunters and do some hooking although I don't know how safe that would be with the effects of allergy meds LOL. I might have to put a rubber tip on the end of the hook so I don't poak my eye out. Well later gals maw.

Smitty you asked about a Sailboat square pattern here try this link http://www.geocities.com/mwillsondesigns/Free/Sailing.html I hope it works out.

Hope you had a Happy Birthday leepsy. I think it must have been a couple of weeks you got married, because I some times think it was just a couple of days ago that I did. I'm 51

And thanks for the well wishes. I hope the new medicine works. That will make two prescriptions medicines that I take. So I feel really darn Lucky... I'm glad you're having good luck with your turkeys and didn't have to put them in your bra

Thanks Karan...I decided cutting my allergy pill into quarters works the best...low low low dose.
wink.png
heh... Only sort of feel loopy then...

OK. This time I am going to try and hook something.
lau.gif
Maybe if I start thinking about it like a different shape first, it will become a square...Maybe I need some kind of frame to stick it in to keep it square.

This is the most I have been in the mood to actually hook, so here I go...
fl.gif
results soon...oh yeah, and those pics...hmmm...this weekend I will get some up... So, get ready with your wee dram, and your hook, and sit back and enjoy some Scotland pics...

It is not even 8am and very dark outside, pouring rain and the wind blowing pretty hard, we're fine, hopefully our friends on the coast are too, they must be getting a beating if we are having this much..wishing them the best.

This crew needs to get well!!WOW! Karan, Shanah, Maw, alot of ya'll sick lately...take care of yourselves girls!! Sit in the easy chair today and hook like mad women and do nothing else!! Get well!!!

Leepsy, so sorry I missed your birthday!!! Hope it was wonderful and full of nice thoughts and sweet surprises!!! Happy, happy birthday!!!!

One day next week when I have time, I'll use this site Wildsky found for me that let's you shrink the website address so it can be copied over and over and I'll fix that link page and add your new ones, just time consuming so I'll get to that when I can, in the meantime, use the list in my link as it is the first one and they should all work. That turkey hat is adorable in the link Karan posted! Cute cute!!

I'm working on my crochet-a-long afghan with the LionBrand site today, have a square and a half done for that! It's woolease and I had to use two skiens together to get a decent weight but that is working out nicely and will make a great winter blankie.

Shanah, if you would post a picture of your square we could tell you exactly where you are messing up and you'll be making awesome squares in no time. Another thought is for you to try something other than the center starts to work up your confidence. Do square squares! Chain about 16 across with a G hook and then single crochet all the way across, chain up 2, turn and go back, repeat until you have 6"...make 33 like that, they'll be awesome, yyou'll feel successful and your squares will be done. For the spring, you can be the queen of the triangles since you have that down pat already, lol!!! I am waiting for my new book, the one Scoot ordered too, before I tackle triangles!!! I bet you'll be great at the hexagons too if you are alreadycrowding up the center with extra stitches, that's the big difference in the hexagons..more in the middle, lol! See, you are on the righ track!! You and Red both try the straight squares..get a ruler and make then 6 x 6 and use a veriagated yarn if you want variety and rock on!! Easy peasy..give it a try.

Thanks Scrambled!!! I am feeling better...I think I am whining because allergies are still a relatively new experience for me...only started about 7 years ago, after I had my daughter.

Anyway...Unfortunately...Square Squares in single crochet is what I have been attempting.
hmm.png
Yup...I gave up on the actual granny about 30 seconds after that first mutant attempt. So, my trapezoid is actually all single crochet. I think I lost count somewhere on the "wide" end...

I am going to try your count, SE and see what happens. I will try to post a picture if I can capture my DH with the camera. Though it really is embarrassing...Maybe I am just doomed to be the anti-square queen!
lau.gif
If I am not careful I will run out of my sheep wool!

Honestly, I wish it was raining here today. We still need more, and I could use the extra motivation to stay in the house and finally get it clean. It got all out of control while I was in Jetlag recovery mode. And I do want to concentrate on getting those Scotland pics up for you all...900 pictures are bit to sort through!

Well, all, I am going to go back to my umpteenth attempt at hooking! I hope everyone has a wonderful day and that the storms don't do any severe damage.

I know now what you are doing, my friend at work still does that and I have shown her a thousand times how make a "square" or straight end...you have to be consistent with where you start your next row..try this...when you turn the firt time start the second row in the chain next to the one your hook is in...go to the end and turn and start your next row in the chain your hook is in...keep alternating like that and I'll bet you will have a real square in one try....

risurocket

When I first started crocheting I had the exact same problem as you. The best thing to do is to follow SE's instructions and COUNT your stitches as you do each row. As long as each row has the same number in each row then you'll end up with a square. I always ended up missing the last one on each row which would eventually lead to the dreaded trapezoid!

Also, when you're feeling a little more adventurous, I was at the 'trapezoid' stage when I decided to make the sampler blanket found in this pattern book. It's made up of 63 different patterns, but each square builds on what you learned in the previous one. The first one you make is single crochet, the next is double, eventually you do a mix of stitches, etc. By the time I finished this thing I was a crocheting fool! And because of the order that they put the squares in, it wasn't too difficult and I learned a lot.

coffeelady and risurocket

That is exactly how I learned to crochet too! I have made 3 of those sampler afghans since in different colors and even extended one to make a king sized spread.

Hope you find just the right instructions, ris, so you can enjoy this great hobby.

The secret really is to count, count, count each row until you are sure you have the same number of stitches.

risurocket Scrambled has some very good advise there as well as leepsy
old.gif
wise and sage words to heed to
I have been checking in to see whats going on
caf.gif

I found this DIY site on basics of crochet maybe it will help also

http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/na_other/article/0,2025,DIY_14142_4852426,00.html

As you will notice they are using makers for the count. You could use those colored paperclips or safety pins.
Just keep trying and as leepsy said count, count and count
yippiechickie.gif
you can do it

Believe me my first ones were really something to laugh about

Good Luck

It started raining here so the plastic covering has been reschuled
barnie.gif
I am sorta disappointed.. We have to have a semi sunny and warm day to have the plastic cover tight enough. Sure hope the sun is out tomarrow

Oh well I guess I'll go do my last 2 squares and I'll have all the extras done too. I'll get something finished today...
