BYC gardening thread!!

I want to build an herb spiral next year. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Not I! These are pretty cool & I was thinking about doing one but I no longer have space for one. Recently moved the herb bed closer to the kitchen & I'm happy with it, Perennial herbs go here, annuals go out with veggies. As viewed for kitchen window, not the best pic but herb garden includes; mint, oregano, marjoram, sage, rosemary, thyme, french tarragon, chives, garlic chives, thyme, curry & lavender. There's a large container of lemon grass just to the right of the runner beans.



Tried Sunchokes this year in a pot, they did pretty well. Next year I think I'll put them in a potato bin so I can steal some through out the fall & winter.

Sunny, your garden is HUGE. How do you space your crops and rows? Do you use wide beds? Do you market garden? Do you actually use all of the veggies you produce? I can only imagine what I'd do if I had that much space that I could call garden instead of lawn. Fruit trees, perhaps some grains, lots of green manure crops. However, I know I'd never have enough time to tend it all or even harvest it all, let alone store it all. I'm hoping to toy around with making a solar dehydrator. Perhaps I'll get it going next summer.

My Wife & I were also planning to play with a solar dehydrator next year. I was thinking that I would make one out of cardboard that would drop into my garden cart so it would be very mobile. We would play with it for the season then determine if we wanted to build something more substantial.

My herb spiral collapsed, because I'm not a great engineer! But the herbs did well in it. I'll rebuild over the winter.

It being this random heap of stones and dirt and compost, lol.
