You could try an in ground raised bed (although it's not really raised if it's in the ground.)
I was thinking something similar to what they do for bamboo might work too. Also, we live in Belgium so the Russian one grows as a weed here. I want officinalis because the monster-in-law (FiL) hates weeds (even useful ones) and if I show him the seed he's less likely to just pull it up. He's the typical "believes everything the news says", conventional, city-slicker type that don't listen to a word I or anyone in the family say about foraging or homesteading. Or anything really.

I mostly don't want it taking over since it spreads through root division. I run a soap company and it's great for lotions, salves, and soaps. I have room to grow in the ground but not enough for it to spread.
It's only "invasive" if you dig around it a lot. Plant it in an area where you won't be disturbing the soil too much. I've been growing it under my peach tree and it hasn't spread at all.

IMO, it's not a plant that you would propagate with seeds. If you wanted to start some in a lawn, I'd recommend digging out a section of lawn about 12" diameter, and then planting the comfrey and mulching well.
