BYC KNITTING CLUB

Dear Featherfinder:
I have been teaching people to knit for years and I am a professional knitwear designer. My BEST tip for new knitters: use wooden or bamboo needles. Don't try to learn on those awful aluminium needles in the learn to knit kits at the craft store. Begin with US size 8 or 10 needles and a smooth yarn - worsted weight if using size 8 and chunky if using size 10. This way you will be able to SEE the stitches clearly and get to know what you are doing.

The best thing is to find someone local who can teach you but if that isn't possible try the links that others have shared. Also try meetup.com and type in your city or area and that you are looking for knitting. Lots of people use this site to find others in their areas with similar interests. I started a group 5 years ago because many women expressed their interest for a knitting group on that site. I found them because someone suggested I search meet up.com once I moved into the area. Give it a try.

I agree about the circular needles. When I learned to knit I used straight needles but once I got more confident I switched to circular needles and have never looked back because they are very versatile and comfortable to use.

A good project to begin with is a dishcloth because they are small projects that you can finish in a short amount of time and can feel a sense of accomplishment. They are also forgiving projects because you are just washing dishes or counters or tables with them. I recommend that you learn the knit stitch first. Using size 8 needles and sugar and cream cotton yarn (if you crochet you may know what this is) cast on 40 stitches and just knit, knit, knit every stitch, every row until the length is as long as the width and then cast off.

The second project I recommend is the bias dishcloth because it teaches several new skills and it is a nicer project with edges that are very elastic. I can email you a pattern for that project when you are ready.

Here is a detail of a square shawl I finished 4 years ago and I had only been knitting seriously for 3 years at the time I began that project.

I just knit all the time and each project that I knit included new techniques that I would have to learn. That way I was/am always pushing myself to learn new skills or to improve my abilities.

Knitting is so good for all of us, so is crochet - there are so many benefits that we can gain from these two wonderful needlecrafts. Here is a link to two articles that I wrote, one about the Many Benefits of Knit & Crochet: http://www.seektheancientpath.com/index.php/at-home/in-the-home/knitting-and-sewing/knitting/63-knit-together-in-love

and

I
hope this helps:).

I just wanted to share a comical knitting story, that just happened to me tonight.

I am working on a white scarf (along with a yellow hat and a blue scarf, funny how when you have empty needles you start making more and more things. Then you have too many!

)
Tonight, I was in bed and I grabbed my knitting needles so I could work on my white scarf, only to find I was missing a needle!
barnie.gif
I tore the whole house apart looking for it. I figured, oh well! And I used my size 8 needles, so I had to transfer the whole entire scarf to the size 8 needles. Well, then I realized I had to transfer them again because they were upside down. So after I did that, I was knitting along for a couple minutes. And after I finished 2 rows of stitches, I went to pull for more yarn and nothing came, I was like "Oh, No! What Now." I look at my ball of yarn and see a pointy thing sticking out of it. What is it? My missing needle!

So after tearing the whole house apart looking for that missing needle, I found it. In plain site. I have no idea how it got stuck INSIDE the ball of yarn.

Oh well!

I think we must be related. I do that constantly! Well not with the knitting needles specifically but with about everything.

Hi! I've been on BYC for about 18 months, but neever ventured onto the HOBBY section till now. I live to knit! I have been knittng for about 7 years this time around ( I leared when I was 13, but did not stick with it back then). Now I knit alot--I like to make baby items, sweaters, mittens, hats, and lately, socks. I love natural fiber yarn.
My current projects are to make bootie socks for my co workers for Christmnas- about 6 pair. I have been trying to unobstrusivley ask my co workers what size shoes they wear without being too obvious! LOL....
any other sock knitters out there?

I'm too nervous to try socks.

I always admire those who knit them!

On a separate note - anyone know how this was knit? If you read her description, she says she uses two different yarns and that it was knit, but the two different yarns are clearly knit separately from one another and I don't get it. Anyone know what technique this is? It looks more woven than knit to me....

The stupid sock made me mad. I do not like how it is coming out. I may just rip it now and save myself the trouble of finishing it.

I moved on to a nice little crochet stocking cap. Finished that in one day, started another. I'm thinking with Christmas approaching, I'm going to start whipping out some stocking caps for presents for everyone.

I have been on a bumpy road with my afghan. It is so much fun but I hit a lot of snags and have to unknit every 8 rows or so. I am getting VERY good at backwards knitting.

For Christmas gifts hats are great. I also found a nice pattern for bath puffs yesterday and plan to do some of those, make soaps and lotions to go with them, and give that as a small gift basket.
I do a lot of gift baskets for the holidays.
I am also knitting a lot of the stuffed animals from Itty Bitty Knits by Susan B. Anderson for friends kids. Like this one: (still have to embroider the face).

This is a great group. And, Annie3001- your scarf is coming along beautifully. Have you tried wearing sunglasses while you knit it?

How cute! I love his round tummy!

I am still knitting hats. I need to get on soap bags.

I want to get some socks done for me and mittens, too.
