Thanks to all for the welcome and thanks to Hattie for the pattern links. I will try to get some pics posted sometime today or tomorrow.

If you belong to the Ravelry community, I just found an adorable free pattern for a knitted chicken. I just typed chickens in the search field and chose patterns to search in. This one is called Spring Chicken by Bluesocks designs. Just adorable. I'm getting ready to start one this morning after I finish wading thru about 3' of snow to feed the chickens and other critters. There are a lot of chicken patterns here. Some free and some to buy. Might want to check it out.

I've tried and tried with no success. I'm currently working on this:

But I'm confused a little and was wondering if anyone could help me out?

*Row 1 [WS]: K2, p to last 2 sts, k2.
Row 2 [RS]: K all sts.
Cont as set, in St st with 2 st garter st edge, until work measures 4 inches, ending with a WS row. In this row, can someone explain to me, in dummy english, what they're telling me to do?

Hi Hattiethehen! I used to live in Bicester and Upper Heyford, wondering if you are close. I miss it sooooo much there. DH and I want to retire back to England someday.

I'm definitely not an expert but I think they are saying to continue rows 1 and 2. The garter stitch is just the knit stitch, and the stockinette is alternating rows of knit and purl which is basically what rows 1 and 2 are but you will end up with a two stitch garter stitch (just knit) at the ends.

Just continue in the pattern (Rows 1 and 2)for the 4 "- stopping this set of directions after you finish a Row 1 (WS) in the pattern. The 2st garter stitch edge is what the K2 at the beginning and the end of Row 1 are. These 2 stitches are done mainly to keep a firm edge to your fabric.
Gosh I love to knit socks. Wish we were face to face so I could help you.
