I made a mobius for myself, not the nicest looking thing, but the pattern said easy! It was I suppose easy, once I got the hang of using both hands! LOL!!

I also played with dishcloths.. my first ones were SO hideous, I had to tell the kids it's Supposed to look that way!! LOL!!

I wanted to learn how to knit, since I was a kid - I ADORE sweaters!! I have had to teach myself, as I can't afford a teacher & no one at home knew how to! It's not like crocheting and takes a lot of concentration.. I have the Back to a sweater I started for my Husband.. I WILL get back and finish it! Someday!!

As you make decreases at the top of the hat, you will eventually have to use DPNs (double pointed needles) the same size as the circular you are using.

You donb't need circular needles unless the pattern calls for them. If you use the two needles then you'll have to sew it together at some point.

When you are knitting a hat, what materials do you need? Do you need a circular needle? Is that it (besides yarn and basic needle).

I usually use a set of Double Pointed Needles, on some hats I have had to also have a circular, but most often I do not need them. You can use just about any weight yarn, provided it gives you the right gauge.

Hats are great fun.

Ask all the questions you need. It is always good to get a lot of input. And having other knitters to talk to is as important as having other chicken owners to talk to.​

As m. kitchengirl said, hats are great fun and ask away with questions! I like to knit hats on a pair of circulars, a friend knits them on one long circular. To finish a hat I use a darning needle to cinch the last few stitches closed. Like socks, hats make great travel knitting. Unexpected delays become knitting time. Have fun!

Hi Sunny welcome to learning how to knit!! I am also a beginner and teaching myself, funny thing all I have tried to make is hats (4 now) I have used the same pattern for all and try as hard as I do they each come out a little different from the others LOL. I know all of the experienced knitters will laugh at that but what the heck look at the money I save on patterns! Seriously I hope to get 2 the same some day, meaning my mistakes will be fewer and I will move onto something else like a shawl that is easy for a beginner. I experience alot of emotions when Im knitting from wanting to throw the thing in the garbage to being so happy when once again I have produced a finished hat. OH YEA not to mention a few off color words that raise my hubbies eyebrows now and then! ENJOY thats what the whole thing is for. Kate

Hi everyone! I also love to knit and crochet, but I am wondering if anyone has any helpful hints on using double pointed needles. I love the idea of making socks, but every time i've tried i find i am always dropping stuff and twisting stuff around. too frustrating. Right now I am working on a warm wooly scarf since I'm sure I'll be able to wear it soon!

My first project with double pointed needles was a very bulky sweater sleeve. That helped a lot, just because it was much easier to keep track of & hang on to the stitches. It was also pretty fuzzy yarn, with a thick halo, and soft, so it stuck to itself. Big stitches were easier to find when I dropped them, too. When I start a project on DPNs I hold the needles almost flat on my lap and then knit the tail & the yarn into the first stitch & about 2-4 more, depending on how sure I am it won't unravel later. Holding the needles as close to flat on my lap for the first few rows & using my place marker helps me not to twist stitches.
Another early DPN project I did was http://www.ravelry.com/projects/angelineabaker/lucy-bag. It is felted so it hides my errors and was fun to make, a pretty quick knit & I still get compliments on my bag. The pattern is at http://twooldbagspatterns.com/felted.asp

I still get super frustrated with every project I do. I have cast on the same afghan three times in 2 days and still don't have it looking right. Not that I am that experienced either, but I think the "fun" of knitting is to get through all the dreary moments and have something beautiful and all your own at the end.
