Hi again fellow knitters
!
I've been fairly quiet lately due to harvesting veggies from the garden - I'm back at work on Monday (I'm a lunch lady at my son's school), then at some point we'll have to harvest the cooking apples
. It's all work and no play here right now.
I'm in the process of knitting 4 cardigans (yes, four). I found a huge heap of yarn in my stash, and discovered there was enough to make one each in chocolate, olive, and spice, and that I'd have enough for a fourth if I used the left overs from those and added some mustard yellow yarn in a striped pattern
. Waste not, want not, as the saying goes.
On top of that, my dad (bless him for indulging me!) has been buying me a weekly magazine that claims to teach you to knit one square at a time, and provides you with the yarn you need. At the "end" of the magazine, you sew up all the squares you've made into a blanket.
I'm about 15 squares behind on it right now, and there's about 6 more squares due to come - then I have to do all the finishing touches (adding cross stitch, motifs, blanket stitch, etc) to the individual squares.
On the up side of the blanket, I have learned some techniques that I thought were beyond me (my nan taught me to knit when I was about 6, but we never got past knit and purl stitches). Having taught myself to cast on and off, make button holes, do basic shaping, pick up stitches for a neck band, etc, I was quite content... But now I can do intarsia, cable and fair isle
.
On the down side of the blanket, we just discovered that the weekly magazine isn't ending after this blanket is complete - as soon as this one ends, they're going on to another blanket!! They even gave the first ball of yarn for the project a few weeks ago. I'm looking forward to it really!!
Then there's the sad, lonely projects waiting to be sewn up. At last count there was 1 cardigan, 3 tops, and a sweater.
I thought I would get some of the sewing up done during the summer break (I find it goes quicker if I sit in the garden!), but we only had the one week of warm weather - the other 5 weeks have been chilly and wet. Oh well, maybe I'll have to make better use of my weekends!
Anyway, sorry for the essay - but that's me up to date with my stitching progress!!
Hugs to all,
Cat.
