I’m a little confused about this report. I could not find any information on the aphis site or the MDAR site. I have been minimizing the time my girls spend in their chicken yard. I’m concerned that my neighbors still let their chickens free range the neighborhood as well as their two cats.
I thought it was just wild birds they found but not surprised to fine any farm/backyard that also has Ducks get it along with their hens tooThere was finally a post regarding the avian flu in Massachusetts on the APHIS site. Apparently it was found in a backyard flock in Berkshire County. I did a lot of digging on their site and found that a dead goose tested positive for the avian flu in Middlesex County on 15 March. That’s a bit scary.
Cockerels are usually hard to rehome. Most people will raise them enough to become dinner. Sorry. Please don’t post them for free on Craigs list either. Most free small animals including cats, dogs and chickens will be used as bait animals.Hi, I don't live in MA, but I am very close to the border. I'm posting on here because I want to hatch some chicks, but I can't keep any boys. So, before I hatch, I want to see if there is anyone interested in taking a possible boy? I could also add an extra girl or two if I hatch them. The chicks would be Easter Egger/Black Australorp mixes.
Yes, I know it's hard to rehome boys, but I figure it doesn't hurt to ask. This would be a very small hatch, so hopefully I'll only end up with one boy anyway, which should make it easier.Cockerels are usually hard to rehome. I understand and I don't eat my chickens either. However, in the circumstance of trying to re-home cockerells, I would prefer giving them to someone you know would butcher them humanely than worrying they were used as a bait animal. Best of luck with your hatch.Yes, I know it's hard to rehome boys, but I figure it doesn't hurt to ask. My chickens are pets, so I could never eat them. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just I personally could never do it.
I for sure won't advertise on CL.
Yeah, I get what you mean. Although, I do have another option if I can't find someone to take a cockerel. There is a farm sanctuary not too far away and there is also an SPCA near me that takes chickens.I understand and I don't eat my chickens either.
