get the above mentioned book..or any beginner book..read it over..get the best "tools" you can afford, buy good fabric..(I'm a 100% cotton quilter) start simple..maybe a 4 patch..practice..

other tips that come to mind:

prewash fabrics
Cut accurately
visit a quilt shop
take a class for basics
Practice, practice, practice

hold on..get ready..it is an addictive trip with no return..

..but oh my at the fun and possibilities

I have to echo "get Quilting for Dummies". It's a great beginners book. It will take you from start to finish. I actually found my copy at a yard sale for 25 cents. I couldn't believe it. I would have paid $20 had I known what I'd learn from it.

Also I can't wait till the 1st. My birthday is the 2nd but hubby is going out of town on work. So on the first he's gonna get me a gift. I told him I wanted a sidewinder. I have an old machine that I use just to load bobbins (it isn't good for anything else) and I'm getting sick of dragging it out from the depths of my sewing area so I can load. This week I've had to load 3 bobbins (different colors for different projects at different times) and it's such a pain in the patoot that I decide not to sew till I feel like dragging the old monster out. So here I was tonight sewing along and guess what. The bobbin ran out. Arghhhhh. I was gonna finish my swap blocks but that is going to wait till tomorrow. The 1st can't come soon enough.

I hope he knows a SIDEWINDER is something for sewing, I was just thinking what is SarahBeth gonna do with a rattlesnake ?

I have seen those too and thought about putting it on my christmas list too since it's affordable and would keep me from unthreading everytime my bobbin runs out! Good idea!

Oh yes he absolutely does.

I've mentioned to him several times what it is and that it's probably the next gadget I will want. If I don't mention something several times he doesn't hear me. lol Right now all I have is a very basic little Kenmore machine that has like 12 stitches if I'm lucky.

I told him I don't want to wear the motor with winding bobbins which will make it last longer. I hope it lasts a year or two so I won't have to charge a new machine. If it lasts till my car is paid off then I can get the machine I really want. The thought of not having another bill right now is very appealing to him for some reason.
