LOTS more people now than it was back in the 50s! I moved here in the early 80s and the growth blows me away. DH and I want to get a a few acres out near Pinon Hills where it is much more rural. Even with the growth, the desert is still much more quiet than down the hill!

You are right about the quiet. It is so peaceful here. we have a view of the Sierras from our front porch and we sit out there and eat breakfast and lunch when we can. We are about a mile east of 395 so that's close to the mountains. We have 2.5 acres with our nearest neighbors at least 10 acres away in any direction. The loudest noise is when my rooster crows.

I can't wait to have a property similar to what you describe. The Sierras are amazing. DH and I are backpackers and that is our favorite place to hike (or even simple camping trips). If there was work for me in the eastern Sierra's, we've be there in a heart beat!

I know what you mean. Fortunately we're retired...did I really say that? Ha! My husband works part time for a furniture store in Ridgecrest and I help a neighbor publish a magazine called Experimental Helo. My son used to live in Hesperia, in fact both my older sons did but they died before we moved here so never saw the place. My oldest used to hike around the hot springs over your way. Maybe some day you'll get to move like we did. At least your close enough to drive.

I am in SoCal (near Victorville...in the High Desert), but I work "down the hill" in Redlands. There are a lot of SoCal folks here!

Hi,
I'm very familiar with Hesperia, A good buddy of mine lives near Main and Balsam.
Also I've been going camping at El Mirage Dry Lakebed, near Adelanto, for over 40 years.
We have a couple of old Landsailers, and Family is also into ATV's.
We love it out there, and also ride the Johnson Valley OHV area near Lucerne.

Looking very forward to the coming spring and summer riding season. It will be the first season for my son, and second season for my daughter.
(so I guess I'd better get busy building a couple of large feeders and automatic waterers for the birds, because I'm looking to some 2 and 3 day trips!) LOL!

Hi Everyone! I'm in Carlsbad (North Coastal San Diego) - I have 6 standards- 1 SLW, 1GLW, 4 EE's. I am getting a beautiful array of colorful eggs and the chickens are like live garden art.

I'm very familiar with all those places! We live a few miles SE of where your friend lives. We're not far from the Hesperia Airport. I am very familiar with Johnson Valley! We go out there for watch the rock crawling competitions and I did MS thesis research was in Lucerne Valley. We have dirt bikes and used to go riding out in Ocotillo Wells several times a year until our attention turned to chickens and gardening. Ever since DH came home declaring he wanted to get chickens, we have touched our bikes! I grew up in Phelan, moved away in my early teens and came back in my early 20s after meeting my husband (who already lived here in Hesperia). The high desert has grown on me. Definitely not for everyone and not the most beautiful place in the world, but it has lots to offer! We are thinking of moving to the Pinon Hills area in a few years.

Have you seen the SoCal thread?

My hubby feels the same way as yours. I now take care of four chickens that belong to a friend. Her neighbors complained about her rooster named "Go Jack" Hubby is humouring me as he's building me an incubator like he did for his students when he lived in KS.
