Calif. N.Central Valley/Foothills

Well, I'm in! And in not too long a time, I will be living in the foothills, so I fit both categories.

kfchickenlady, how are your son's call ducks doing??

One of the reasons I am so thrilled to be buying a house right now - as long as everything goes well! - is so I can KEEP some call ducks!!

I can't really tell y'all what I have in my flock because I have so many.... and not very many of each breed, so they're mostly all different. No official breeding plan whatsoever. HHandbasket has been hatching some of my eggs, though... all mutts at this point.

I'm glad to see this thread (although I will continue to peruse the Bay Area thread).

The Silkie one I hatched out didn't have the feathering either. The skin is very black. Is your chicks skin black or extra dark.

I hadn't held many of mine either, but the past 2 days they think they are parrots. They see me or heard me and come running, where they used to just freak out and jump all over. Even my FBCMs were doing that and some of the AM babies, but they're getting better. Just been so busy I haven't had time to just hang out with them, but I will hopefully after next week and then school is out in 2 weeks, so no more running back and forth from there.

I have more eggs going into lockdown tomorrow. I'll hopefully be gone for the weekend, so I hope they make it out on their own.

Kate was it BCM EGGS you needed? I did answer your pm btw. I have a cockerel that I just got this weekend. He's a Wade Jean bird, but he has yellow legs. Don't know if you are interested in a roo, but you can have him if you want him and give him a good home. I mainly got him to use for my Marans x Games, but I do have others I can use for that.

I Linda,
I thin I remember you from all the posts when Cheryl was going through her initial mess. Poor thing. I think she is doing much better now with the recue/reserve she hooked up with. I certainly hope so. I have one of her Fitzgerlad Wheaten cockerels out of a #8 egg. I was so impressed. Now if I could get get some of mine to do the same. I ordered 18 Fitzgerald eggs immediately when I got home from her house with the little guy. Unfortunately only 4 hatch & it looks to be 3 cockerels & a pullet.....MY luck....LOL. There were only 2others that had formed & all the others were clear. I always do eggtopsies on failed eggs. Shipped eggs are such a gamble.
Good luck with your move & new house.

Karen I just locked down the next hatch. No BCMs at all in there.

I think I'm going to try and sand the shells and see if that works. Whatever I collect after that I'd like to get to you.

I'm having a hard time trying to find camping equipment and figuring out how to camp with my car and not my van. Plus trying to do this with very little money and no energy. I'm so tired and my brain is not working. Have had a ton of things to take care of and I'm not very fast, so takes me 3 times longer than a normal person. Makes me really frustrated.

I have to lookup what else I just locked down, but out of 12 I one had 4 Redcaps and 5 of the ones I need to look up out of another dozen. The PO %#@^%#$

Hi All,

I'm in Placerville near the Shingle Springs line.
Have LOTS, LOTS, LOTS of babies this year. (Okay, maybe a little too hatch happy.)

Currently Available:
4 BCM cockerels @ 5 months. Sweet Boys. Super dark eggs hatched from Georgia. Supposedly Davis lines. (wolf-No yellow legs here. Had heavy feathering at hatch.)
Assorted Cochin chicks from 1-4 months. Off colors from Lemon Blue Project. (Wingshadows, Bishops, & my own lines.)
Mystery Bantam chicks: 1 month old. Were supposed to be Bantam Buff Brahmas, but are not. Sweet heavily feathered feets.
Silkie Chicks: 1 month old. Extras thrown in with some ordered eggs, but I don't need silkies. 2 black, one blue.

Looking for:
local Sebastopol goslings or hatching eggs.

If anyone is interested PM me and I will send photos.

Hello

,

I'm also new to the world of chickens, but this website has me so excited I've jumped right in with both feet. Thank kfchickenlady for giving me a heads up! Will be great to get to know some locals who can share their wisdom

I'm in Sonora.

Ok, here's what I'm working on: I have ordered a Genesis Egg Incubator 1588 & Turner Chicken on eBay, and ordered 6 Partridge Brahma eggs from lorad in IL. I know, very risky, but lorad has been a joy to work with. I hope the incubator gets here a day or so before the eggs, so I can tune it in. Also, I have day old chicks on order at some of the local feed stores: 2 buff orpingtons, 2 Black Jersey Giants, 2 New Hampshire Reds and 2 Lt Brahmas. They should all arrive by May 19th. Do you think these breeds will be okay together? I have the brooder set up, and my DH is working on a large chicken coop, which should be beautiful *when* he gets it done. I have sectioned off a large portion of my fenced back yard for free ranging in my garden.

I went to the livestock auction in Escalon last Friday and was kind of disappointed! Lots of roosters, but not many chicks - or maybe I just arrived to late? Are there any other livestock auction up here or in the Central Valley that are worth the drive? I'm really looking for Cochin chicks or eggs, does anyone have any to sell?

Connie

Welcome, Connie!

The breeds you've selected will get along together just fine. NICE selection!

I'm going to be moving to Somerset within a couple of months, and who knows what I'll be incubating and hatching then... it seems I just cannot stop myself. However, if you're getting an incubator, soon you'll be hatching your own Cochins! That's just how it goes - what you want to add to your flock, you buy as eggs and incubate; if you don't have a lot of success, you do it again. And again. And if you DO have a lot of success, you STILL do it again, because you can!

Funny day today I got a call at work from a lady who had found a little mallard duckling on the side of the road apparently had gotten separated from moma and a crow was dive bombing the little guy and knocking him down she said. I told her sure what the heck and she dropped him off he seems to be a healthy day old or so little mallard, cute little bugger but two small for my runners they are already a couple of weeks old. Feel bad for the little guy all by himself. I have chicks hatching next week but fear giving him an identity crisis lol anybody have any day old small ducks?
