Hey! I have been looking through the breeder/hatcheries list and can’t find any in California! I’m looking for specific chicks or hatching eggs and would love to get from a breeder, not a hatchery back east! It’s warm here, all my birds are still laying, so I assume that’s correct for most of California. Any help is greatly appreciated. I’m looking for cream legbars, sebrights, and a few others!

Are you in Northern California? Alchemist farm has some beautiful breeds including cream legbars but they won't start hatching again until early next year. Papa's poultry has Speckeled Sussex and I believe they are still hatching chicks. I also just put a dozen olive egger eggs in my incubator and will need to sell a few chicks once they hatch.

Belt hatchery is in Fresno.

And yep, Alchemist Farm does have legbars and should next season. They have a few breed to choose from, though definitely not cheap.

Personally Papa's has too many things/projects going on for me. Though I haven't seen any complaints on them.

No, you are incorrect about ALL of CA being warm. Nights get pretty chilly in the hills already and it doesn't get too warm here on the north coast either (max daytime high is 65). Of course So Cal may still be a lot warmer. Then consider ordering from hatcheries in the south. Like Green Fire Farms.

Speckled Sussex are beautiful birds! I personally would wait until next season and go pick them up at the feed store. Biggest problem with breeder chicks is you have to deal with roosters if it's not an auto sexing breed. I excel at hatching roosters and usually get MORE than 75%. Also please note that NPIP does not mean they haven't seen Marek's, mites, lice or other things... which shouldn't be an issue with eggs or incubator hatched chicks.

Good luck getting the breeds you are interested in. :pop

Thank you so much! I’ll look into these hatcheries... I was hoping to find a breeder who isn’t a company. You know, like from someone’s house who breeds cream legbars or speckled Sussex! I know they exist, just having a hard time finding them. Thank you for all your information!

Are you in California! I’d definitely purchase chicks from you if they won’t be shipped very far, or can meet with you somewhere! That would be phenomenal.

Yes! I live in San Jose but I will be making a trip down to Southern California the week of Thanksgiving. The chicks should hatch around November 6th.

Where in CA are you? You can find a woman in the SF East Bay who sells cream legbar chicks on Craigslist - but not sure if any now. Also there is a guy - I don't believe he is Papa's - who sells legbar chicks on the Facebook page "California Northern chicken people" I think it is called? something like that. When you find someone, I'd suggest you take pictures and post on the cream legbar forum here - people are very nice and helpful and can let you know their assessment. I love my "colorful" strain of legbars, but got them from someone who bred for egg productivity - they are quite productive but I'm afraid they may be more inclined to reproductive problems. So you'll want to make sure you get birds that reflect your goals, whether for showing, or for egg color, or egg quantity, or good foraging, big/small crests, healthy/long-lived, etc.

I'd also suggest finding a breeder who is smalll-scale, but who knows their stuff. I've encountered breeders who didn't know they were selling mutts, not Americaunas.
