Yep, my favorite chicks almost always turn out to be boys. I have one black Langshan cockerel (21 weeks old) who follows me around the yard like a dog. He is interested in everything I'm doing out there whether it involves treats for him or not. Unfortunately, he is not up to standards for breeding. His body is broad but his tail is pinched.

A nice comparison of my eggs.
Left egg is Betty's egg (bc marans x black orp just started laying a week ago), middle is an Orp egg (been laying a month) and last egg is a duck egg. :D You can see Betty's egg is browner than the standard Orp egg.

Nice eggs! I wish that my hens would start laying again. The organic eggs from Costco sure don't measure up to my girls' eggs!

I probably should have picked a blue breed to work with. But now I have blue barnevelders, so things are lookin' up!

BTW Trisha - I have 2 blue boys (one stands out already as a looker) and 1 blue pullet. I think the rest are blacks, but there is an iffy one that might be a dark blue.

Quote: Gotcha beat - try crowing at 1 DAY old. His daddy crowed at 4 DAYS old.

Silly chicks

I was lying in bed last night when I heard a rustling outside my window. I sat up and looked out the curtains to 3 raccoons standing on a table outside my room! I called my kids in to see and we went into the kitchen to get a better look out through the patio door. We opened up the door and not only did they not run, but they came closer as if waiting for a treat!

My coops to my knowledge are completely secure, but that didn't take the worry of what if.
All was fine this morning, thank god!

I know how you feel. I've seen raccoon tracks in the snow. Even though my coops are secure at night, it's still unsettling that something is stalking them.

I've thought about putting traps out, but the last time I did, I caught a skunk. That was not fun. (and yes, I got sprayed)
