Yummy!!!  We didn't have our traditional pecan pie for Thanksgiving because I just couldn't bring myself to use corn syrup.  :(   But it is on the menu for Christmas!  I am going to use Lyle's Golden Syrup which is a cane sugar syrup made in Great Britain.  If anyone is interested in trying it as a substitute for corn syrup, I found it on amazon.com.  Gotta love amazon!

You can also use pure maple syrup :)

Took his 4th chicken.
My crazy Partridge penedesenca hen that was so funny. would run around screaming. really did not like me much.
My big rooster is not the answer.
so tomorrow back in the covered run.

So sorry for your loss! We have a dog that will not allow any kind of bird to get near the ground. He is our house dog, but he has a view of the chicken pen. He had a fit anytime there is anything near, and I know to just let him do his job!

Made some very hard decisions this morning....

I'm going to get out of the chicken "business".  A few other reasons, but mainly my health. I just can't do the things I like to do anymore it seems. Of course I'll still have chickens in the backyard, but the breeding is going to have to be put on the back burner.  I will be selling everything...

incubators, coops, birds etc.  Birds will be auctioned or sold privately, everything else... I'll probably put a craigslist ad together.

It's been so much fun with all of you guys!

Oh I'm so sorry Cheryl but at least you can keep some of the chickens on a smaller scale.

Jason - maybe you should look into a livestock guardian dog? I agree with Deb on emu's not being a good choice to protect your flock. They recognize ANY chicken that is new and try to stomp it. Mary keeps her emu's separate from her chickens.
We have 2 LGDs. They were born in the field with mom caring for sheep. They are not really good with the chickens. They have to be fenced until the chickens roost each day. I don't think they would hurt the chickens, but they want to romp after them to make them scatter. They are just over a year and have definitely mellowed, but it would require A TON of work for me to get them to work with the chickens

so sorry to read your news, Cheryl -- i hope that some medical solutions are sorted out soon!

and sad to report that a red-tailed hawk took one of my sussex girls this morning -- go figure it would be a white one -- can't blame the hawk, but i feel sorry for the poor chicklet. everyone else is completely freaked out -- managed to get all but two back in their coop, but those two are hiding deep in a thicket and will not come out. i'll just leave them alone for a while...
