Happy Birthday Laura !!!!

rain finally easing off here in Sonoma Co, after a very rainy night, with lots of lightning, the thunder was shaking the house! i wonder whether the chickens wake up to notice, or just sleep through nighttime storms?

hoping for a bit of a respite before the next one is slated to hit tonight. it is, after all, officially winter now! yesterday was my birthday, & also the last day to turn fall semester grades in, so grading is pretty much all i did -- but now have two weeks to do almost nothing but *write*, trying to get a book project done.

jealous of those of you who have snow!

They wake up and notice! They often take a day off from laying after stormy nights, especially with the lightening!

and enjoy the time off! I hope you are not teaching an Intersession class?

I know some people have been having a hard time keeping their chicks alive in this cold....fyi I will be selling this brooder if you guys need it, PM me
That is a great Brooder!

I can't manage to kill mine off with the cold. I keep expecting it. I have 9 chicks brooding under an ecoglow 20. They are 2 weeks old now and last week on one of the frozen mornings they were all on top of it in the Garage! That night I tried stuffing a couple of them under it and realized that they were too big to fit under the lowest setting! I adjusted it up one and they scooted right under.

Those Blue Barnie OEs are stout little things Too!

The rain stopped for a bit today, so I let the layers out into the Mud!

The Production Red is Bullet. The SG Dorking is Mimi. I am very happy that she made it into the coop last night!

There is a BR behind the pallet! It's great that the one H RIR( I think I am going to call her Stella) is integrated with the Layers now! She flies over the fence into the back yard and when I come home from work she walks up to me so that I can carry her back through the gate. I would clip her wing, but she is too Pretty!

BR chicken butt! This one has yellow feet!

The sand is working better in the little coop and run. There is a bit of water in there, but it should go away soon.

This is a Blue Marans x Dorking:

And this is my Mille Fleur EO Basque Pullet, Leela!

thanks all for the birthday wishes -- it's an odd birthday to have, the shortest day of the year -- when i was little i thought it literally meant i had *less birthday* than anyone else!

and NO WAY would i ever teach intersession -- the pay is ridiculous, and with our shortened winter break, you literally have zero time off, it goes directly from the last day of finals to the first day of intersession, and again with the start of spring semester. i'd go insane.

but not really time off, either -- winter break is my only chance to focus on writing, and i'm trying to get a book project done. so skipping christmas with my family back east this year, staying home & writing. maybe i can get the chickens to help!

I guess I get to be a thread hog today!

More pictures, this time of the Barnie OEs. They are 2 weeks old now.

I have one Pene X CL in there because he wanted to have a picture taken!

The weather here is freaky wind, overcast and the trees that suround my house are making a creepy whistleing sound. The only thing i hope doesnt happen is that the 38 year old euctalypus trees dont come crashing down. Out by one of the breeder coops, the power went out and my poor black silkies were freezing, so i brought them in, cleaned their feet and put chicken dipers on them. They like it in the house, but they learned to stay out of the kitchen.
