California - Northern

I don't know if this is appropriate to ask you all to keep a friend in your thoughts and prayers today..

...My son's 4-H poultry leader had a terrible thing happen because of this rain last night.

A single fence board came loose and a neighbors dog's got into her yard.

The dogs killed 18 chickens, a pair of hand raised turkeys (breeding pair) and her prize winning geese and gander (breeding pair just under 3 years old). I'm just so sad for her. This has kind of made me realize how fortunate I am and made me stop complaining about the time and effort it costs to care for my chickens. I hope none of you lose chickens or pets to any more preditors.
Oh man. That's terrible!

No snow here but we have a very chilly 36 degree rain. Probably snowing at 3000 feet up my way.

well so far all my eggs look good. I have not candled them yet but no stinky's or cracked or sunken. I will probably take a peak at 2 weeks to see how they look.
Hope some hatch.
12 empordanesa ( possibly a few empordanesa x crele penedesenca crosses)
9 Cream Legbar x Crele penedesenca eggs from Deann.

Okay I know this is probably not where I should post this, but it has to do with California so......

I've heard its free to have a necropsy done if your located in Cali, but from the research I've done, I haven't been able to find anywhere that does it for free.

I've found places that do it, but they charge $120 for 1 to however many birds you send them.
Does anyone know where they do it for free?

Thank you!

Free for less than 1000 birds:

UC davis. Google uc davis home flock or something like that. You go to the commercial age first otherwise.

CAHFS us a State program administered by UC Davis. They have 4 Labs and you can mail the carcass or take it in to any of them. I have taken 2 to the Davis Lab because I work on Campus.

It is free for small flock owners of less than 1000 birds. It is hard to find the correct form, so I have put it into a link

Here is the information;

UC DAVIS

http://www.cahfs.ucdavis.edu/index.cfm

The form is here: http://www.cahfs.ucdavis.edu/local-assets/pdfs/StandardSubmissionFormFeb-2011.pdf

You can send dead birds here for necropsy testing. I hope you don't need it, but Debi/PetRock suggested this addition and it's a good one. Thanks Debi and Ron, for the link.

UC DAVIS FEDEX INFO: Their account # is 364343981. If you use their account number you will get to use UC Davis's discount which is up to 70% off. They said that they will bill you for the shipment after you get the report (or at the same time.) Also, FedEx and UPS both ship to the actual lab every day... the Postal Service doesn't.

Quote: Thanks for your reply Ron.

The link didn't work, but the to one did.
I have never shipped a bird for a necropsy and don't know "how" to do it. Do I just put the bird in a box and ship it?

I double wrap them in plastic garbage bags and put them into an ice chest but I carried them in. For shipping, use Fedex. USPS does only delivers to UCD On MWF. Also, it is break now and the mail service does not run on closure days. Several have shipped this Fall so they may have better tips for you.

You can send in more than one at a time too(check to see but I think it is 8). In hot weather I would put in an ice pack. They usually get the results to you within 3 days or so. It is great information!
