so here's a question for anyone who might still be around & on-line: my next-door neighbor (the nice one, not the grumpy one) recently got a rooster for his flock, which does not free-range, they all stay in their coop/run -- and my flock *does* free-range when i'm home & the weather is good, and there's no fences between our yards -- and today one of my girls ended up hanging around at Al's coop, we presume drawn by the rooster crowing? is this likely to become a habit? if i had a rooster of my own, would he keep my flock away from the other coop?

and if i was making a chicken-photo christmas card, this would likely be it:

merry christmas/happy holidays to all!

Hi Laura! Just sat down for a sec while things are finishing up in the oven. That pic is great, love all the texture. So happy to have a break from the rain.

As for your wandering girls, I imagine they will be attracted to the rooster. If you got one of your own, they would probably hang around with him, provided he was a good guy of course. The other thing to consider is that two roosters within hearing distance of each other will often get into crowing matches. At least that's been my experience. I believe it's a territorial behavior, so the closer they are, the more they will crow. So if you happen to enjoy crowing....

Happy belated birthday and Merry Christmas wishes to you!

Merry Christmas everyone!

We are up in the mountains for Christmas. Got to shovel 2 feet of snow for exercise today. It's supposed to snow tomorrow - first white Christmas for us and the kids. Now that I don't have to drive anywhere, it can snow all it wants.

We made our family Christmas dinner tonight. A small fresh rosemary, garlic, herb, salt crusted prime rib roast. The sides were warm homemade bread, fresh steamed green beans and broccoli. Homemade pumpkin pie for desert.

Today, I also baked 3 loaves of bread, 2 pies (pumpkin and mixed berry) and 1 batch of oatmeal, chocolate chip, cranberry cookies.

The Weather report said it might snow Tuesday night or into Wednesday morning. Other than that just rain, rain and more rain and everything is so wet right now. On the bright side, I got a first pullet egg today.

maybe now that the days are going to get longer the rest will start up too.

Happy Holidays Everyone!!!

Prayers for a wonderful full life for all my chicken friends... you guys are very special. We spent the last 10 hours making 150+ tamales (using the traditional methods we learned in Mexico) with 2 of my sons, it was a great day - lots of family coming tomorrow to eat them with the traditional beans and rice we'll make tomorrow.

Thanks everyone on this thread for being so supportive of the very heard decisions I've had to make. I'm hoping that many of my flocks can go to locals.
