Once eggs are set how many times do you candle them ? At 7 days then at 14 days ? Or every 4 days? Any help id appreciate it
Thanks

Here are some pictures of my CL X CP 11 week old rooster. He looks more like a Crele Pene, but got the crest from his Cream Legbar dad. I am wondering if I should hold out and try to hatch a roo with a smaller comb, or atleast one that's not so floppy. Jason, I would love you thoughts. Note, there is a purebred Cream Legbar in a couple of the pictures. Note, the white legs on the cross.

If they are shipped, I candle them as soon as I open the shipping box to see how badly the air cell has been scrambled and put them in the auto turner with it off and let them sit as still as possible for 3 to 5 days depending on the air cell damage. Then I turn the auto turner on and will candle them. After that, I candle them when I add water. I hatch at 35% humidity, so a modified dry hatch. There is an air cell chart that shows how bid the air cell is supposed to be on the different dates of incubation so you should candle on those dates to see how yours are developing.

Non shipped eggs go right into the turner and then I candle any time I want to. You do not usually see any thing until day 5 or so, so candling earlier is just for fun.

I do a final candling at lockdown to position the egg--I don't to the X marks the spot thing. I look for the biggest part of the air cell an slightly tilt the egg back from that. I cut down egg cartons for the eggs to sit in.

I hope this helps,

I candle mine 2 or 3 times. The first time between Day 4-7 to look for development. Then I re-check the ones that I wasn't sure of around Day 10 and remove any clear ones. Then I candle a last time before Lockdown to make sure the chick has continued to develop. Sometimes I mark the aircells with a pencil while I'm candling to make sure the aircell is getting bigger. And, this helps me to know about where to expect the pips.

The only thing to keep in mind is that every time you candle an egg -you run the risk of dropping or cracking it.

I hate to admit that I've done it myself. I tried to turn it into a learning experience by studying the tiny embryo with my son.....but I felt SO terrible.

Oh, I might as well mention this on this post:
All 4 of my silkies have hatched!!!

It depends on what I'm hatching. White eggs are fun to candle because you can see everything - it's really cool for my kids to see the chick "swimming" around in the egg.

My usual hatches are dark eggs - such as brown and olive. They are much harder to see into. I usually candle once at about 10 days to look for eggs that didn't develop and again at lockdown (day 18) to see how many are viable for hatching.
