Ok, blast from the past question... Who did I get those beautiful moss green hatching eggs from at the BYC chickenstock at Cheryl's ranch?

I hatched two roos and a pullet (who should be laying any day now) and I can't wait to see if she lays the same color egg. Anyway, I was hoping that person had hatched some chicks and had some pullets for sale/trade? I would love to get another hen/pullet or two to put into a breeding pen to try and keep making those eggs. There were some blue eggs from the same person and that girl is laying already.

If anyone remembers, thanks!!

Cheryl- I hope your hen gets better. :( I could only think of egg bound when you described it.

Betty is officially broody. When we opened the coop doors this morning she was in the lay box. When I passed out treats this afternoon she remained in the lay box. When I checked under her butt for eggs she stayed in the lay box (growling). Tonight it was pitch dark and all the chickens were roosting Betty was STILL in the lay box. Yay! She has 4-5 eggs under her now. Do they take care of themselves? Like potty, eat and drink? Should I ever freshen up her bedding? I'm so excited - my first broody hatch!

YAY!!! Hooray for Broodie Hens!

With my two - as well as all my mom has had - they will get off the nest once a day to go poop and get some water and food.

Mine really appreciated food and water close by so they could eat and drink without moving.. when I finally moved the Silkie girl inside to a "broody cage" she ate like she was starving! I didn't change the bedding - because they don't poop there - but I will warn you - if you do like I did and bring her inside in a small cage - make sure you have a gas mask for when she poops - its really noxious! Oh - and don't panic if they move eggs away from under them - or get off for an hour or so and the eggs cool down - somehow they know just how to time those eggs so that they will all hatch at the same time. They do it by cooling down the ones that are ahead - and warming up the ones that are slower... really super incubators those broodies are - you would think they were MADE for it!

How exciting! I have a broody hen but no rooster :)

Well the new ones made it through the night just fine. Standing tall and cruising around in the bator, cheering the third pipper on.

One of them has pieces of the shell stuck to her, should I try to remove it when I move them to the brooder or just leave it alone? It isn't as fluffy as the other one. There was a little yolk left in the shells after hatching and I think she has it on her down. She also had stool in the shell when she finally freed herself so it could be either one.

Did you mark the eggs? Take a sharpie and draw a line all the way around the middle of the egg. Other hens will sneak eggs under her, and if they are not marked, you don't know which ones to remove every day. Then you get a mess of hatch dates, and she will have to either abandon the rest of the eggs or let the chicks that already hatched die.

hey all -- wow, my mom has been visiting for an afternoon/evening, so i've been off this list, and wow, over 100 postings here have piled up, no way i can catch up! especially since i'll be sailing both days this weekend -- but i have a quick question for anyone who might be around: my chicklets that have started laying, a couple of weeks ago, they are all looking/acting very healthy and happy but all of their combs/wattles have gotten paler than they were before they started laying -- they've gone from bright red to just pink. should i be concerned, or is this normal?

(they eat their usual Bar-Ale all-natural noy-soy (which contains oyster shell) feed, plus kale & yogurt on random days, and whenever i get home early enough, a few hours or free-ranging...)

thanks!
