Thank you! We got him with a bunch of young cockerels that we were raising for meat. We had to put down our flock roo for getting aggressive with the kids, so I waited until the meat birds got bigger. He is calm and pretty, so he got the stay of execution.
He's really handsome! I am a sucker for big big chickens!

Yesterday my cat showed up after being gone for a week. He had a broken back leg, think he got hit by a car. Rushed him to emergency, it was bad news, they were going to have to amputate the leg, going to cost a fortune. So on the day of my daughter's 3rd birthday party, I had to have my cat put to sleep. I had hoped this year was going to start out better but that's not a very good start.

So sorry to hear this! Our animals are like family. I probably would have made the same decision.

I hope that wasn't one of the ones I helped process. I thought I had gotten every thing out of them.

If the meat looks and smells fine it should be fine. There is a much lower chance of contamination from your own meat. There is a high percentage of bacteria in store chickens.

I would eat it.

Just checked the thermometer, 29.2°. I'm tired of this cold already. We have not gotten over freezing all week. At least no signs of frostbite on the boys combs but I'm sure they would like a warmer day once in a while. Forecast isn't showing much promise either.

Could have used some of this while the fair was going on, 7 days of 100°+ heat.

I will be putting food and water in front of Betty. I personally don't ever see her leave her nest but she could be. The strange egg is an EE egg that she stole and put under herself. It's mostly blue. Looks like the EEs brown coating has become very very light.

Are there any signs that I should be looking for to make sure Betty is ok? I don't want her to become dehydrated, or not poop or not eat etc...Wasn't sure if there were any thing I should be watching out for. Her health is more important to me than the eggs. <3 Thanks guys!

haha her face cracks me up

my fave of the day. one of the reasons WHY i wanted farm animals in the first place. i figured if we were going to have to be busy...might as well be busy together as a family. my son thought he could hide from my camera. ;)

Here is a photo if her sitting next to a FCBM chick. She is at least 10 weeks older. They did not want to cooperate for this photo session though. LOL
