California - Northern

My chickens will sometimes nibble on the tender grass sprouts but for the most part seem to leave more mature grass alone. They do like to dig up the dirt and find buggies it looks like though. My ducks don't eat grass that I have seen. My geese keep it trimmed down a bit because that is actually their #1 favorite thing to eat. :D Wish I could afford mini donkeys- I think we'd have our 5 acres covered for grass and bug control. haha!

Also it looks like no one wants to go off campus at Stockton. So they want to meet at the con session stand. Everyone should be there by 11 that sound good?

I thought I'd bring some picnic stuff if people want to eat. The food there last year was terrible.

We are getting here when they open to check out the sales area. Hoping for a nice showgirl roo in a use able color.

I'm late to the game. Is this where everyone in this thread is meeting up? Saturday at 11am?

Chickens will definitely eat grass. I think what Ron was saying was because I was sprouting grains for a while. It was a lot of additional work and time. I didn't see any positive results from it. Same with the raising mealworms. They were fine for a treat but there was no way to raise enough for a large flock. I have about 15 acres of grass pasture for my chickens, so growing something in addition wasn't worth it, or necessary. For people who don't have greens for their flock, it is worth it to grow or sprout something, anything green, for them to have some sort of forage. I know a couple people who have done the forage systems. One used the Farmtek system, the other made up her own. Neither has any grass or grazing areas for their animals, so the forage is their only source of greens.
I dream about having 15 acres of pasture! I would love to set up a paddock system with my birds.

Be careful with verticle systems of you free range. Or have turkeys. Stuffing ate all our lettuce and did a number on the watercress too.she could get right in the trays and also loved rootballs. Bad turkeys! She would have knocked a vertical system right back over.
We are going to start soon. Got the bucket and stuff but this week had some bad surprises then Stockton. We did just start sprouting wheat for the silkies and quail that don't free range. Mario is very excited about both. He went a little crazy on the wheat. It is like 6 inches thick instead of 5 or 6 wheats thick. But it is sprouting! Now. Just have to find somewhere to put 6 tubs.

Did I say before the acv at trader joes is no longer active? It has mother but it is pasturised! I have not figured out what the use is of that stuff now.
Our back patio area is fenced off so we don't have to deal with birdy deposits on the cement. I want to set up some kind of vertical garden along one long wall. Hopefully, the few young pullets who like to fly won't be tempted to hop the gate to get to it. We also have several areas of the yard that are fenced off for gardening. We only let the chickens in to those areas after the plants stop producing. As soon as it warms up, we are going to plant a cover crop in one of the areas and let the chickens forage there once the plants have grown tall enough. It is my small scale version of a paddock system.

We are driving from Redding with 4 kids. 8am might be a stretch for us. LOL We might shoot for 10am and to meet everyone at 11. Concession stand...is there only one?

I so wish I could make Stockton. Everyone have a great time for me! Hope to see some of you at Anderson though.

Anyone with young kids going to the Shasta County 4-H show? I think it is the day after Anderson show.
