Broody Betty kicked out egg #4 (that's the labeled number of the egg). We left it where she kicked it out since yesterday and I finally brought it in today. Smelled like a fresh egg when I cracked it open and had no bulls eye. She knew. So crazy amazing.

I blow out the bantams eggs and feed it back to them if we don't eat them. I have a hard time cracking them due to the cuteness factor.
LOL! We only have 1 bantam. She lays about 4 eggs a week it looks like so far. That's not too bad right? I read that bantams are poor layers but she is kicking out 4-5 eggs a week. That's what my Orps lay. I do hope some of the eggs I collected of hers prove to be fertile. I gave 6-7 of them to Jeff. My bantam roo does mate her so I know that is going on- but if they prove to not hatch maybe he is older than I was told? Or just less fertile due to Winter? *fingers crossed* I won't even sell the banty eggs, I cannot imagine anyone wanting such tiny eggs. I do adore seeing their tiny little chicken bodies running around.

$1/dozen?

I would go broke literally trying to care for what...that's at least 50 chickens. $28 a week assuming they sold all the eggs...would that even cover food? I don't feed that many chickens. Are they eating scratch do you think? I know people that only feed their chickens scratch. How do the chickens survive? (honestly asking) I'm so curious lol!
sometimes $1 on CL means Make Offer. I have seen cars listed for $1 and I never new what that meant.

If you open the add she is indeed selling them for $1/dozen and says she gets 4 dozen a day. I know chickens for some are sheer hobby and they can afford their feed and care without selling off anything so even $28 a week could still prove helpful because they don't really need 'help' paying for their chickens care. Right now I charge friends $3/doz. If the demand got high I would increase it a little because I feel they are worth more than that. But I am ok right now. :D

It's 56 degrees outside and is sprinkling.... very warm storm. Yesterday it was SUPER warm! I wore a T-shirt for the first time in a month or two!

I was thinking of trying spinach in our greenhose, (unheated), to feed the girls. Would kale or another crop be better?
Kale is very good for them. It has a lot of vitamins and fiber.

I will try to find the CA Chickens booklet.

Quote: Chard also grows from the base of the plant when the stalks are cut off. I call it the plant that keeps on giving! We had 5 stalks keeping us in Chard from Sprint to Fall one year.

It is also very good for the chickens to eat.
