California - Northern

Hey northern peoples, I have a question. I think I joined a Facebook group for chickens because I thought I saw an email notification about it, but I can't find the group when I search for it. Any ideas? I also can't message the admins on FB because their profiles don't have the option to message them. It's okay though no biggie :p
Also, are the weather conditions or enviroment more ideal up there to raise chickens? I don't plan on moving, just wondering.

Hi Moochie,

It's nice to hear from you and Hi from Woodland, CA.

I can't help you with the face book question. I don't have a face book account but am thinking about it.

You live in the Dessert of Ca? I have Nephews and Nieces that live there and was amazed when they came to visit in the winter and did not bring a coat! Your area will be dryer and warmer all the time. We also get freezing temps in the morning in the winter and some places use heaters for the chicken's water. Summer temperatures can reach the low hundreds with the occasional 110, but it usually cools down at night. Chickens that can take some heat do well here. I think it is a good place to raise chickens. The biggest problem can be with predators. Even some places in the city have problems with raccoons. Others have to deal with mountain lions, foxes, hawks, possums, skunks and etc.

It was nice hearing from you!

Ron

Moochie, search groups for California Poultry People - if you are not a member it might not show it to you since its a closed group. But its closed for privacy of members not because of exclusivity, if you give me your facebook email address and I can invite you to group in case you are not already a member :)

Anyone in SF know of a good way to keep rats out of the coop food? We leave our coop open day and night and the rats just love it. I walk in during the day and saw a rat just munching away in the feeder. Gross! That's not who I'm buying organic feed for!

Is there anyway you can hang your feeder? It might be harder for rats to get into the feed if it's suspended off the ground.

You can buy a feeder that closes when the chickens are not eating. They stand on a lever that opens the door. It's a bit expensive but if you are paying to feed rats, It might be worth it.

I found a link to a feeder you can make that allows the chickens to eat but the Rats and etc. can't get into.

I might have to try this!

I have a friend here in the Bay area who is looking for Black Jersey Giant hatching eggs or POL/laying hens SOP preferred. Does anyone in this area breed them or do you know of someone who does?

Quote: I have building a feeder like that on my to do list. one of these days I'll get to it.

I have too many projects too. I may take Friday off to get started on them. I keep getting vacation warnings, so I need to take some or I will stop accruing vacation

I have the gate ready for the fence I am building to keep the chickens out of the main part of the back yard. After that, I need to clean up stuff from the painters and some wind damage from last year. I will let the manure compost for a couple of weeks and then re seed the yard. I also need to get the coop feeder set up in my chicken hutch pen combinations that will become breeding pens. Oh yea, and I need to figure out how to get rid of a bunch of chickens

I have 45 of them now...
