California - Northern

I went into Ideals website, looks like they have all but the CA grays. I didn't check the available dates on each breed but not until May. I might be able to get our Grange to special order them.

I am so touched that you guys are willing to take these steps to help me. If it turns out that it is a possibility to get them through a feed store that uses Privett, that is probably what I will do. I want white eggs just because it makes a pretty basket to have a variety of egg colors and I chose CA Greys because they are not flighty like other white egg layers. But I don't want to ask anyone to go out of their way to help me secure them or spend an arm and a leg at this point.

MichaelApple (I think) on byc lives in Marin County and has ordered I think a breeding pair so maybe I will be able to get some hatching eggs from him next spring when I have will hopefully have a broody Speckled Sussex to hatch and mother them for me.

On a quest for Speckled Sussex, Partridge Rocks, California Greys, Delawares and Easter Eggers would like to get all chicks within a week of each other but am willing to hit multiple spots. The EEs and the SS are the most highly desired on my list.

Any of you Mendocino County peeps buy your chicks in Ukiah? Rainbow Ag Orders from Ideal, TSC orders from McMurray and I don't know where Medocino Farm Supply orders from but was wondering if you had any knowledge or reviews. I am looking for someone to include a special order with their store order if neccessary.

How about Northern Sonoma County? I have no experience with these either. Our Rainbow Ag won't special order and the chicks I want won't be coming in at the same time

Ron I hope your eggs are still viable! since I followed your advice about canceling my order with MM I have read on hear about loads of people who have lost all or part of their MM shipment. Hence my feed store scavenger hunt

Oh and I am quite envious of you with incubators...hoping to have natural incubators in the form of broody hens this time next year so I can get started exploring that end of chicken fun

Good Luck with all of your hatches and your new babies!

Thanks for any information you have for me.

. I think
You sound like I was last year about this time. Now I have Silkie broodies - and chicken math has multiplied that up to 4 silkies.... and now a roo....

Quote: Just a note on the Privet EEs.. the two "Americauna" I got from my feed store last year (they buy from Privet) both did not have beards/muffs. The hen does lay a green egg (the other was a rooster) - but you might get some that lay a brown/tan egg. If they managed to loose the muffs/beards, what else did they loose? Choose carefully....

I have 3 similar ages chickens. 2 male and 1 female. The female is small, a sizzle and quite small. I am trying to figure out how best to integrate her with the flock. I eventually will house the males with my other males. I do not have any other similar aged chickens.

To get the female integrated should I just let she and her two male buddies integrate together and then pull then once she makes it "in"?

Mm getting lunch in the car. Just wanted to remind you hens from hatcheries rarely become broodies. If that's important to you might pick up a few from a breeder that likes that.

I got partridge rocks and SS from Ideal 3 years ago.

My rocks are much broodier than the SS. 4 of the 5 rocks wanted to set, only 1 of the 6 SS showed an interest in sitting on the eggs, size is more of a med. than large egg.

I found big differences from 1 year to the next with the BSL. The first ones we got were pretty calm girls, laid big eggs regularly, DH liked that about them and wanted more of them the next year. The BSL we got the next year are panicky, feather eaters, and some are mean in the nest boxes when collecting eggs. The second batch of BSL have proven to be healthier than the first. Lost 2 of the 3 from the first batch, all of the second batch are still around, if fhey make it to fall.

Once again these birds came from Ideal, Privett may not have the same issues.

Best of luck in your search.

Quote: Lakeport isn't too far then. Probably better than trying to get them through the post. There is usually a line out the door on the first morning chicks are available, and at least last year, no pre-sales or holds on chicks, but not sure if they will order for you. If you ever need me to check on availability, send me a pm and I can go look for you. (Like I need an excuse to go look at chickies!)

Yes, I got 2 EE chicks last year and one was a roo. Great beard and muffs and pea comb, but he now lives on a farm in Mendo Co. The pullet is a great layer of large greenish eggs, beard/muff and pea comb all present. It's easy to pick out the chicks with the fat faces!

My broody hatched 1 chick. It pipped on Monday night. Today, the chick was out from under mom, but she would not leave the nest, so I pulled her out to check the other 2 eggs. They did not develop :( Glad I checked though! I would be heart broke if this sweet little thing died because mom was waiting on the other eggs!

ETA: I just called 3 local feed stores to see if anyone had chicks. The soonest will be Friday. I thought I MIGHT have better luck grafting a couple to her, if i could get some today. Thoughts?
